I gouged my tub surround the first time I tried removing caulk with a flathead screwdriver. Never again. These actually grip and pull old caulk without leaving marks on porcelain or acrylic.

Once you pull off old caulk, you'll probably see black mold underneath. Don't just caulk over it. That's how you end up right back where you started in three months.

Not all caulk is the same. I used cheap acrylic caulk the first time and mold came back in eight weeks. Silicone with mold inhibitor built in is the only thing that's lasted.

My first attempt involved squeezing a tube by hand and getting silicone everywhere, on my fingers, the wall, somehow in my hair. A decent caulk gun makes clean lines actually possible.

Taping both sides of the joint before caulking is the single tip that took my results from amateur to clean. Peel the tape while the caulk is still wet and the edges come out razor straight.

Dragging your finger through wet caulk works okay but leaves fingerprint texture and uneven spots. A proper finishing tool makes the bead look like a contractor did it.

My bathroom had zero air circulation. Mold kept coming back because moisture sat on every surface for hours after each shower. Fixing airflow was the real long-term solution.

Recaulking is a pain. Keeping existing caulk clean means you won't have to redo the whole project again next year. Five minutes a week saves a full weekend later.

Water pooling on ledges and in corners feeds mold. Removing standing water and letting air circulate around the tub made a bigger difference than I expected.

Silicone fumes and mold spores in a small bathroom with the door closed knocked me out the first time. Learned to protect myself before round two.

My tub had pulled away from the wall leaving a quarter-inch gap that caulk alone couldn't bridge. You need backer material to fill deep gaps before applying a surface bead.

I only noticed my mold problem because I dropped my phone behind the toilet and the flashlight revealed horror along the tub base. Better lighting means catching problems early.
