My first apartment had zero mantle and I literally duct-taped a stocking to a bookshelf. These clip right onto shelves, desks, or entertainment centers and actually hold weight without sliding off.

When you don't even have a shelf worth clipping to, a floor stand saves the whole operation. I set one up next to my tree and guests assumed I had some elaborate holiday setup planned for months.

Drilling was never an option in my rental. These stick-on and over-the-door hooks gave me stocking display spots I didn't know I had, and they came off clean when the lease was up.

Before I found these, I tried using bookends and a prayer to keep stockings upright on my console table. Weighted holders actually sit flat and stay put, no shelf lip required.

Half the battle is the stockings themselves. Cheap thin ones look sad no matter where you hang them. These have enough texture and weight to look full and intentional even clipped to a random shelf.
