Skipped this step for years and wondered why everything looked cakey by noon. Once I started prepping properly, some days I literally just stopped at this step and walked out the door.

Most primers made my skin look like I'd spackled a wall. These actually disappear into skin and just make everything sit better, which is literally the whole point.

Full-coverage foundation was my security blanket until I realized it was doing the opposite of what I wanted. These let my freckles and skin texture show through, which weirdly made everything look better.

Nothing screams ‘I’m wearing makeup' louder than concealer sitting in every fine line. Took me forever to find ones that actually blended into skin instead of highlighting the dark circles AND the wrinkles.

Powder used to terrify me because it always made me look ten years older and like I'd dunked my face in flour. These set everything without stealing the life from your skin.

Accidentally drew my brows on too dark once and looked perpetually surprised in every photo. These give structure and fullness while still looking like brows you were born with.

Powder blush used to sit on top of my skin like war paint. Switching to cream and liquid formulas changed everything — now it actually looks like blood flow instead of makeup.

Wanted my eyes to look awake and defined without anyone being able to point to a specific product. These add warmth and depth so subtly that the effect reads as ‘good sleep’ instead of ‘eyeshadow.’

Thick spider lashes scream ‘makeup’ from across the room. These separate and lift lashes so they look naturally long — like you just have really good genetics and plenty of sleep.

Wanted something that added color and hydration without looking like I was wearing lipstick. These enhance what's already there so my lips look healthy and flushed, not painted.

Product choice matters but honestly application changed my results more than anything. Stopped using the wrong brushes and suddenly the same products I'd been complaining about started working.
