As a historical fiction SNOB, here are some of the best I’ve read. All are available on audibles as well!
My all time FAVORITE!
The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois: Oprah Pick
The characters here were so brave which made the story very suspenseful. I won’t spoil the ending by saying anything more.
The Reformatory by Tananarive Due
This was like historical fiction wrapped in a love story. Also, this is one of the first books I’ve read that tells the story of life during COVID as “history”. I found myself questioning if that was all really 5 years ago.
Zeal by Morgan Jerkins
This book is sooo good! And enlightening too.
The Book of Night Women by Marlon James
You will likely cry. But, it’s nice to get a novel that brings so much awareness to the personal lives of enslaved women. The perspective is so up close and personal. Also available on audibles.
Yellow Wife: A Novel by Sadeqa Johnson
Very beautiful coming of age story for a young black woman.
Maame by Jessica George
Rich with African and African-American history. Also available on audibles
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Black nationalism, coming of age, beautiful story. Also available on audibles
Nigeria Jones: A Novel - Zoboi, Ibi: Books
Before reading, I didn’t have this knowledge of the history of black girls and women’s reproductive healthcare. Very important piece of black history.
Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez

The American Queen: A Novel of Appalachia
Story of a young girl and her white-passing father after escaping their “owners”. Good read.
