I bought four gardening books before I found ones that didn't just repeat the same vague advice. These are the ones with dog-eared pages and dirt stains because I keep dragging them outside with me.

My first raised bed was a wobbly disaster made from leftover fence boards. These are what replaced it, and they've survived two winters, a toddler, and a dog who thinks garden beds are nap spots.

Mel's Mix changed everything for me. I used to just dump whatever bagged soil was cheapest into my beds and wonder why nothing grew well. Getting the soil right is the single biggest thing I did wrong for two years.

The grid is what makes square foot gardening different from just cramming plants into a box. Without a visible grid, I kept accidentally overplanting and everything competed for light like a mosh pit.

Not every variety works well crammed into a square foot. I wasted an entire summer trying to grow sprawling watermelons in a 4x4 bed. These are compact varieties that actually produce in tight quarters.

Overwatering killed more of my plants than bugs ever did. Square foot beds drain differently than ground soil, and I had to figure that out the hard way with a bed full of drowned basil.

Square foot gardening in a short growing season felt pointless until I figured out how to start earlier and harvest later. These bought me an extra 6 weeks of growing, which in Minnesota is basically a second summer.
