items I've been making cards for over 25 years. I have tested hundreds of paper crafting products. From paper to adhesives, there aren't many card making supplies that I haven't tried. Here are the winners that every beginner needs.
EZ Runner Scrapbook Adhesives are my favorite all around tape runner for making cards. It's one of those supplies you don't want to run out of.

You're going to need a variety of colors of cardstock. You will use them as the base for your card and for rubberstamping. Choose a heavier weight for your card bases. When getting started you can get away with white and off white and use thinner card stock for layering and stamping.

A paper trimmer will help you get straight lines when cutting your pieces for handmade cards. I have used the Fiskars trimmers for years and really like them. I find them easy for putting in a tote bag or travel.

There are so many rubberstamps to choose from. You can find sets with sayings that go with decorative images, and you will find something for every holiday and occasion. I really like set from Stampendous. They are good quality and great designs. If you buy acrylic stamps, you will need acrylic blocks to use them. If they are wood mounted, you use them like they are.

You will need a black ink pad. I recommend Tsukineko in Tuxedo Black to get started with card making. After you get started, you will want a variety of colors. Make sure you get good quality ink. Cheap ink will give you poor results.

Zig glue pens come in a variety of size. You will need a thin one for attachings that are tiny like die cuts.

When you're making cards, sometime you will find something that your tape runn adhesive won't stick. Buttons, glossy paper, glitter paper, ribbon, and metal embellishments are hard to stick to handmade cards. Glue dots will stick all of those.

I often use patterned papers and scrapbook kits to make my handmade cards. It's a great way to get a variety of papers. Some kits come with stickers, die cuts, ribbon, and buttons. Since everything coordinates, it's easy to make great handmade cards. Echo Park is one of my favorite companies that makes these kits.

Colored pencils are great for coloring in images that you have rubberstamped. I prefer watercolor pencils. You can use a water pen or blender pen with them to give it a natural look on your handmade cards.

Tombow dual tip pens are great for coloring images that you have rubberstamped. I like the ones that are brush tip on one and and fine tip on the other end. They come in lots of great sets.

A good pair of sharp scissors will come in handy when you're making cards. I have used EK Success scissors for years. They are small but very sharp with a comfort handle.

This isn't a “must have” for beginners, but once you get started making cards, you will want a die cutting maching. The Sizzix Big Shot is a great one. It cuts mats and all kinds of shapes for your cards.
