I am an avid reader, but it's not possible to hold a book and turn pages while working with yarn in your hands.  At those times, I love listening to a book being read to me.  This is a list of the books I have really enjoyed listening to:  crime/detective novels, historical novels, classic literature and autobiographies.

This is the start of a series.  A London police detective working with a team to solve crimes.  I liked the pace of the story, all the twists and turns, and thoroughly enjoyed listening to Marston York narrating.  I think this first book was free to try, but I've bought the next in the series and am enjoying that immensely.

The start of a detective series around a pair of women: one is a university professor, one is a police detective.  A well-paced story that combines detective work with the relationship between the two characters.  I am enjoying this series when I want some easy listening.

This is the start of a series about the psychologist Alexander Gregory, a man battling his own demons but called in to help the police by profiling a murderer.  I enjoyed listening to this and have gone on to buy the next few in the series.

This is more of a play, involving different actors.  It is an engaging few stories set in Roman times.  Undemanding and enjoyable.

The start of the Shetland series.  I had already read most of these in paperback, years ago, but I tried the audio version and loved listening to Kenny Blyth.  A well-paced mystery and interesting characters set against the stunning scenery of Shetland.

I chose to listen to this one because (a) I like Reginal Hill's style and (b) it was narrated by Jonathan Keeble.  It has suspense, mystery, red herrings and interesting characters.

The rise of Thomas Cromwell under the reign of Henry VIII.  The characters are so well-drawn and the historical details so vivid that you feel totally immersed in the story.  Narrated by Ben Miles.

The start of a 5 book series set at the time of Henry VIII.  The central character, Matthew Shardlake, is a lawyer.  I thought the whole series was fabulous, the characters were believable and the historical details were vivid.  Beautifully narrated by Steven Crossley.

Set in Saxon England, tracing the Viking invasions and the rise of Alfred of Wessex through the eyes of the boy Uhtred.  This series follows Uhtred as he becomes a man, a warrior, a warlord.  I was hooked after the first book, and binged on the entire series.  Jonathan Keeble narrated the first 4 books in the series, and then the narrator became Matt Bates.  Initially the change was quite jarring, but I have to say that Matt Bates grew on me.

An autobiography, read by the author, written as a series of anecdotes and memories from his notes, recorded when he was training to be a doctor.  Whilst being ‘laugh out loud’ funny in many places, it also saddened me to learn just how pressured our doctors are.

I read most of the Dalziel and Pascoe series in paperback years ago, but I chose to listen to this one because it was narrated by Jonathan Keeble. That man could read the telephone directory to me and I'd listen. The characters came alive with the na...

Narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi, these are timeless stories about the adventures of a Benedictine monk in the 12th century.  I read these in my youth, and enjoyed revisiting them as told to me by Jacobi, who is the perfect narrator.
