For anything too big for the pruners, I can usually count on my lopper to do the job. I try not to pull them out unless I have to because branches can get in the way of the long handles, but they make quick work of unruly shrub growth.

Step 1: Get yourself a hose timer. I've got mine set to a couple sprinklers that run at off hours in the early morning for peak absorption. Best part is that I never hear it or have to think about it.
