Love Songs

These are 5 highly recommended love songs that played a major part in my youth that (in my opinion) are still very romantic to this day.  A few years ago, I made a special episode on my podcast about these songs and explain what each one meant to me in detail.  Check out “Top 5 Love Songs of Your Past”!

 Yes, I’m taking it back to mid-70’s with the band that gave Jeffrey Osborne is big break.  He spares no detail when describing what he’s feeling; in fact he gets right to it and proclaims “I’ve never been so much, in love, before…”.    In the words and voice, you can tell our guy has hit that rare spot where nothing else matters but HER. Family or friends may minimize their relationship, but they just don’t know, and he confirms this with the closing, repeated words “And what we...

 The young man in this relationship may be young, but when you hear what he says in this tune, you undoubtedly know he’s in a deep, DEEP love with every fiber of his being, and is so happy to be with the woman of his life.   “Still in Love” suggests that there IS a possibly of having a loving relationship - where the newness, “euphoric, and honeymoon-like” feeling of being in love never ends…

Tevin represented a young man with an old soul; and in the title track of this album, he clearly shows that just because someone is young, doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t know what they want in life.   After hearing the first few lines, one may think this is a song of heartbreak, when he says “Sometimes, when I’m alone, I feel sad, I know you’ll leave me once again, and take my pride…”.   I tell you – deep, beyond the bottom-of-the-ocean, undeniable love to the point where you’re willing to be the fool, and nothing else matters. If that’s not vulnerability, I don’t know what is…

 You can tell from the first note that this is an upbeat, sentimental proclamation of a man’s love for his woman of many years; explaining in no uncertain terms, that this is what LIFE is all about.   It starts out the gate: “You are the love in my life – you are my inspiration – just you ‘n me – simple and free – Baby you’re everything I’ve ever dreamed of…”.  AND I QUOTE: “Life is SO EASY, when you’re beside me…”.   Chicago never fails to amaze…

 In the midst of Billy Joel’s “rock youth” of the late 70’s, he’s demonstrated the musical ability to slow down, write, and sing a love song that is affectionate and tender.   In “just the way you are”, he falls in love with a woman who’s perfect for him, and right in every way; and there’s nothing, NOTHING she needs to do to make him feel more for her — as he says “I couldn't love you any better…”.   This song pays tribute to man’s devotion, tenderness, and love for the one and only woman in his life – with no complexities or frills – but in the simplest and sweetest of forms.

Sad Songs

Just as important as the songs that played a part in our love life, we must equally acknowledge those songs of despair, loneliness, and complete heartbreak.  These are 5 highly recommended sad songs that played a major part in the many heartbreaks of my youth that can still bring a tear to my eye even today. A few years ago, I made a special episode on my podcast about these songs and explained what each ...

Debbie may have been young, but she was an extraordinary song writer.  In this song, she breaks up with her beau, only to regrettably realize she's made a mistake, and needs him in her life.   The regret and self-pain is genuine not only in her tone, but also in her phrases such as “I can never love again, the way I love you”, and the regretful woe of “When I was sorry, it was too late to turn around and tell you so…” and “Didn’t know I ...

 In this tune, Harry uses the term “Melancholy” and that’s exactly how he sounds as his lover breaks up with him.   You feel the levity of pain and heartbreak in his voice, as he declares things like, the sun doesn’t want to shine today, and the April that I knew has turned into a flowerless May. HIS WORLD IS FALLING APART, and you can feel it! And he reminds he...  Whether the tune is sad or swingin’, Harry “Brings it” in everything he writes and performs – no question.

 Breakups are hard, but none as hard as the long-lasting relationship that Shirley and her beau are ending.   She ponders things like, “with bits of memories scattered here and there, I look around and don’t know where to start” she’s seems to be talking to her lover, asking “which books are yours?, which tapes and dreams belong to you, and which are mine ...  Throughout the song, Shirley tries to keep a “brave face”, until near the end when she ponders “do you allow yourself a little time to cry?”

 This song switches from the “heartbroken” to the “heartbreaker” perspective. About a man in a relationship, who’s not only no longer in love, but continued to stay with his lover, until he can’t pretend anymore. At which point with his mind made up...  When talking to his lover, he directs the blame all on himself, remorsefully saying things like “You gave me everything, and now I’m breaking your heart”…   Sorrow, pain, and despair comes to the heartbreaker as well, as he genuinely professes “I feel sad enough, I feel bad enough…” and “Please don’t hate me then, I just could not pretend any more…”.  Mark King and the guys proved that just because one is doing the break-up, doesn't mean they don't hurt as well.

 You can feel the undeniable presence of a painful heartbreak in Diana’s voice; seemingly blindsided by the news of their breakup.   Her questions seem to imply no prior knowledge or idea of a breakup, when she asks “was there something more I could have done? Or was I not meant to be the one?, Where’s the life I thought we would share? And should I care?”   Then sadly realizing this romance can’t be salvaged, she hopelessly asks: “Should I leave you alone here in the dark, holding my broken heart…”.   MY GOODNESS!   Love surely exposes the power and pain of vulnerability…
