Even if you've seen photos a hundred times, nothing compares to standing inside St. Peter's Basilica. I would set aside plenty of time here because every corner is filled with incredible art, history, and opportunities for quiet prayer.

As the Pope's cathedral and the oldest of Rome's major basilicas, this church has a special place in Catholic history. I love that it's often a little less crowded, making it easier to slow down and take everything in.  The Scala Santa (Holy Stairs) is right across the street
Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran - Basilica San Giovanni in Laterano

This beautiful basilica is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and is one of my must-see stops in Rome. The stunning mosaics and peaceful atmosphere make it easy to spend more time here than you planned.  Pope Francis is also Buried here and the relic of the Holy Crib is here as well.

Churches Every Catholic should visit

Rome is filled with beautiful churches, but these are the ones that truly left an impression on me. From breathtaking artwork to centuries of history, each one offers a unique glimpse into the richness of the Catholic faith.

The mother church of the Jesuits is filled with stunning artwork, but don't rush through it. Look up—the ceiling alone is worth the visit.  It is also right by where Julius Caesar was assassinated so don't miss that too.

This basilica houses some of Christianity's most treasured relics associated with Christ's Passion. It's a deeply moving place to pause, pray, and reflect. This is one of my favorites!  It also house Doubting Thomas' finger!

This is one of Rome's hidden treasures because you can literally walk through layers of history beneath the church. It's a fascinating experience that most visitors don't expect. Make sure you go all the way down to the first century city underneath!

This is a must do.  Schedule your tour directly through the Scavi office at the Vatican. Don't do a tour---it's cheaper to do it through the Vatican.  It was one of the best tours I could imagine and you get to see the relics of St Peter in the original tomb in the Neocropolis!

A little pricey for me but definitely worth it if you want fantastic pics without people in them.  The tour is only about 20 people and you get to go behind the scenes.

Seeing Michelangelo's famous ceiling in person is one of those unforgettable travel moments. It's even more breathtaking than I imagined.  Here is a tip--go during the papal audience.  It's empty and we were able to spend over an hour in the chapel and even sat on the chairs on the side and enjoyed the ceiling and artwork.

If your schedule allows, attending a Papal Audience is an experience you'll remember forever. Seeing the Holy Father alongside pilgrims from around the world is incredibly special.  I bought a ticket for the audience through Viator and paid about 30 euro for it but I was literally right on the end and got a fabulous photo of the holy Father right in front of me.
