We put this inside the lid flush against the slots and secured it with bolts and washers. A 2 pack of 12x24 was more than enough.

One of these on each bolt so they don't pull through or bend the wire mesh.
#10 x 1 Stainless Steel Fender Washers
These went around the edge of the mesh - through the slots - no drilling! - to hold the mesh tight against the lid.
#10-24 x 1/2" Phillips Pan Head Screws (50)
These nuts tighten on to the bolts to squeeze the mesh tight against the lid. There are no gaps they can squeeze through!

We hang these upside down from the lid and put the thread up through the mesh. Then put on a washer and a wing nut for easy to move anchors for hanging toys!
