Acer palmatum - Japanese Maple
This is small, evergreen shrub has the most beautiful, white-violet flowers with numerous long stamens. The flower buds are known for its great taste and eaten fresh or pickled, but so far haven[t had the pleasure myself.
Caper bush
With heart-shaped leaves that turn yellow, orange, purple and red. It has a sweet toffee apple fragrance when the leaves fall in late autumn.
Cercidiphyllum japonicum, Toffee Apple Tree
Fragranced flowers from pinkish coloured buds in the Spring. In the late Autumn the tree has edible cherry sized, light brown apples, soft when ripe which provide food for the birds and this fruit can be used in conserves or eaten raw.
Malus hupehensis - Tea Crab Apple
A twiggy, upright deciduous tree which produces masses of beautiful, white flowers in early spring. Orange, red or yellow plum-like fruits can be eaten straight off the tree or used to make jams.
