I like to always have a non-fiction book going, but as a fiction-lover, I'm picky. So here are the books I've best loved for spiritual reading as someone who would prefer, generally speaking, to have a novel in my hands. ;-)

I learned more about the biblical Christmas from this book than any other I've read! One I'll reread regularly during Advent and Christmas!
Joy to the World: Christ's Coming Changed Everything
I was AMAZED at all I learned about the Last Supper and the crucifixion in this book…but sure enough, it's all there in the Gospels! Mind blown!
The Fourth Cup: Unveiling the Mystery of the Last Supper and the Cross
I knew absolutely nothing about the Poor Clare nuns and wouldn't have thought reading about them would be fascinating…but it was SO FASCINATING! Gonna have to reread this one and take some notes on the laughter and joy these sisters find in the conte...
A right to be merry
A small book with a HUGE impact on how I think about freedom in Christ! Quick read but you'll be pondering it for years to come.
Interior Freedom
A friend sent me this, and it happened to arrive when we were in the hospital with a Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis for my son. Talk about timely! Fr. Jacques has such amazing insights into biblical peace--read it with a highlighter in hand!
Searching for and Maintaining Peace: Treatise
Communion takes on so much more meaning when understood in its historical context! This book was AMAZING!
Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist
As a recent Catholic convert, I admit I didn't fully “get” the “Mary thing.” But this book helped so much, especially coming from the perspective of a Protestant pastor who also converted to Catholicism.
Hail, Holy Queen: Mother of God in Scripture
You know what helps Revelation suddenly make sense? When viewed through the lens of the liturgy. Another mind-blowing book from Scott Hahn!
The Lamb's Supper, The Mass As Heaven On Earth : Scott Hahn
Basically a transcript from a conference, this book by Elisabeth Elliot has some great insights on how we can still find joy even amidst horrible loss or pain.
Suffering Is Never for Nothing
How to use every moment, every frustration, every challenge as praise to God? This “Little Way” that St. Therese de Lisieux lays out in her autobiography is a classic for a reason!
The Story of a Soul: St. Thérèse of Lisieux
I've yet to read anything by Lewis that I didn't love, and this one was just SO GOOD. A must-read for every Christian!
Mere Christianity
Perhaps it seems weird to recommend an actual BIBLE in my non-fic spiritual reading recs, but this isn't “just” another Bible. It's filled not only with insightful commentary both by Bishop Barron and classic sources, it's also filled with history, a...
The Word on Fire Bible: The Gospels Volume 1
When we create, we are participating in the work of our Creator in an important way. There were many times in this book that the author's tone made me doubt I'd agree with him…but then I absolutely agreed with him, LOL.
Called to Create: A Biblical Invitation
This is sort of told as a fictional tale, but it's definitely a non-fiction treatise on the spiritual life, as viewed through the eyes on demons. Lewis's observations on pride have especially stuck with me!
The Screwtape Letters
As usual, Lewis offers amazing insight into the different types of love that fill us, and how to properly order them.
The Four Loves
The book that made me a lifelong Bob Goff fan! Through hilarious stories and an open heart, this debut book from Goff hits with a profound truth about how we should be acting as Christians--namely, filled with love in every moment.
Love Does: An Incredible Life in an Ordinary World
It's all about the covenant between God and man…but covenants aren't something we understand today as well as they did in Biblical times. This book does a fantastic job of making real this elemental truth about faith and the love of our Father God.
A Father Who Keeps His Promises: God's Love
Bob Goff's second book continues the theme of LOVE DOES, with more stories and such amazing spiritual depth about what a life lived in love actually looks like. And it's inspiring! I loved listening to the audio so I could hear him tell the story in ...
Everybody, Always: Becoming Love in a World
There's a reason Jesus used the language of home so often--mother, father, brother, sister, and so on. Family is SO important, and our earthly versions ought to mirror a heavenly truth. As usual, Hahn does an amazing job exploring his themes in this ...
First Comes Love: Finding Family in Church
I've loved all of Bob Goff's books, but this one is my FAVORITE…because it's not just his stories, it's a hands-on challenge to live the life we want to live, one that will leave a lasting legacy and keep God first. SO GOOD!!!
Dream Big: Know What You Want and Why
Another book by Hahn that seeks to explain the biblical truths behind customs that might leave moderns scratching their heads. I found this one so enlightening!
