More than anyone else, St. Benedict of Nursia (c. 480-547) is responsible for the rise of monasticism in Western Christendom. His Holy Rule summed up by the motto “Ora et Labora” or “Pray and Work” is still, even after 1400 years, the bedrock upon wh... Feast: July 11

Tradition calls her St. Veronica of Jerusalem (1st century).  This side of heaven we will never know for sure anything about her. She’s not mentioned by name in any of the four canonical Gospels. A hard-living soldier in his youth, St. Camillus de Lellis (1550-1614) had a religious conversion in 1575. Because of an incurable leg wound he had received fighting the Turks however, he was denied admittance to the Capuchin Order three times. Havin...

According to his biographer, St. Camillus de Lellis (1550-1614) was devoted to Christ crucified. Twice Christ appeared to him—once in a dream and once in a vision—at a time when St. Camillus was facing opposition to his plans to found his Order. In  the  vision, Christ detached Himself from the cross as pictured here, accused Camillus of cowardice and encouraged him to follow through with his plans.  + Feast: July 18 (in the United States); July 14 elsewhere

Marmion Kreations profile picture
Another COLLECTION featuring St. Margaret of Antioch but emphasizing  her patronage of the dying  instead of those being  born…  Like the Old Testament tale of Jonah and the Whale, the story of St. Margaret and the Dragon is an analogy for Christ’s death, entombment, and resurrection from the dead.  a Resurrection banner just like the one that the Risen Christ carries on Easter Sunday--a banner that signifies victory, victory over death… and the promise of life eternal to true believers. + Feast: July 20

In Eastern Orthodoxy, St. Mary Magdalene was never conflated with St. Mary of Bethany, sister of SS. Martha and Lazarus, nor with the "sinful woman" who anoints Jesus in Luke 7:36–50. Therefore, she was not deemed nor demeaned as a reformed prostitut...

St. Martha of Bethany (1st century) appears perhaps three times in the Gospels: preparing two (separate?) dinners (Luke 10:38-42 and John 12:1-3) as well as witnessing the raising of her brother Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1-45 passim).  Tongue in cheek, rather than ancient sandals or the turned Medieval shoes with pointed toes that she wears in the original painting, Saints_Aplenty has given St. Martha on some items comfy athletic shoes on our aprons especially for waitstaff. Spanish Basque nobleman and soldier turned priest and theologian, St. Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) was founder and first Superior General of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits).  Bound by a vow of special obedience to the Pope, the Jesuits undertook missionary work and education in orthodoxy under papal directives, playing an especially important role in the Counter-Reformation. Mary Magdalene (TV Movie 2000) ⭐ 6.3 | Drama, History

Marmion Kreations profile picture
Perhaps the best feature film on the Magdalene…  Some will find it too bland in color being accustomed to the Biblical epics of earlier times.  Some will find it slow or talkie instead of reverential and inspirational.  Still others will find  it too controversial and “feminist.”   Regardless, it deserves at least one viewing.  +  Because it is a somwhat polarizinng film, I've included two reviews in this list.

Before he was a saint, Camillus de Lellis was a sinner--a hard-drinking soldier, a gambler, and a brawler, that is, what some used to consider a manly man.  This novel traces his conversion, redemption, and metamorphosis into real manhood as founder of the Camillans, a religious order dedicated to nursing the sick and dying.  A very good read…

Inspiring look at the early life of the founder of the Jesuits from about age 7 to about 30…  Recounts his conversion from a hard-living soldier to would-be soldier of Christ after being wounded by a cannon ball.  It's a pity, though, that the film ends before he actually founds his congregation.  Thhere's a second movie waiting to be made about this extraordinary saint!
