St. John the Baptist (1st  century) is, of course, the forerunner of Christ, the voice crying out in the wilderness “Repent!” and “Make straight the path” of the Lord.  In Catholicism, St. John is commemorated twice during the Church Year: his birth on June 24 and his death on  August 29.

Movies and Books (Part 1: St. Thomas More and St. Etheldreda)

THE Academy Award-winning 1966 biographical film starring stage actor Paul Scofield…  Although a masterful character sketch, this film has largely colored public perceptions of St. Thomas since its appearance casting him in an unremittingly positive light.  Somewhat darker and less flattering interpretations appear in Wolf Hall (2015) and The Spanish Princess (2020).    [ I have not seen the preceding and  highly acclaimed 1966 Australian production.]

7th century A.D. England was a patchwork of kingdoms in constant turmoil vying for political ascendancy. It was also an era of saints.  In the pages of this rather short novel, you'll not only meet St. Etheldreda (Audrey) but St. Wilfrid of York (ignore their fanciful mutual crush a product of the novelist's imagination) and numerous others.

Movies and Books (Part 2: St. John the Baptist and St. Peter)

Every movie depicting the life of Christ includes portrayals of St. John the Baptist and the Apostles.  As such, they are too numerous to detail here.  Here we provide several lists and reference a few stand-out flicks. It should be noted that these lists often include peripherally related films.

An interesting, cross-cultural viewing experience… The only theatrical film said to be a biopic of St. John the Baptist is a 1963 black-and-white Malayalam-language (Southwest Indian) film.  Curiously, it begins not with Gabriel's appearance to Zachary, John's father, or Mary's Visitation to Elizabeth, his mother, but with the birth of the Christ Child and ends with Jesus' crucifixion. St. John's screen time is actually quite limited and... Read thehindu.com/features/cinema/snapaka-yohannan-1963/article3754188.ece before viewing for the plot.  Worth a look, and  I do mean a look!  I  could not get any auto-generated closed captions in English to work

I must confess I've never much liked most of the portrayals of St. Peter in life of Christ movies. I do, however, very much like Shahar Isaac's portrayal of Simon Peter in The Chosen.  But, then again, I very much like the series on the  whole for being an accessible modern re-telling of the Gospels.  Perfect? No. Catholics and ancient historians will quibble about certain interpretations.  Nevertheless, this is a series that deserves its popular and widespread acclaim.
