Got bogged three times on my first day. Twice within sight of other campers who just watched. Having proper recovery gear turned embarrassment into a five-minute fix.

Nobody told me I'd be airing down to 18 PSI on the beach and then pumping back up for the highway. Did that dance twice a day for a week straight.

Cell service disappears the moment you leave Kingfisher Bay. I relied on Google Maps and ended up on a closed track staring at a creek I couldn't cross.

First night I set up a regular tent on the beach. Wind ripped a pole out at 1 AM and sand got into places sand should never be. Switched my whole setup by day two.

Ran out of water on a hike to Lake Wabby because I underestimated how hot the sand dunes get. Walked back dehydrated and sunburned. Never again.

Got destroyed by march flies on the eastern beach. They bite through thin fabric and laugh at regular bug spray. The sunburn situation was equally brutal.

Tried cooking on a campfire my first night and burned canned soup. The wind, the sand in everything, the lack of flat surfaces. Proper camp cooking gear changed the whole trip.

Lake McKenzie looks like a postcard but the walk in is deceiving. Showed up with nothing but boardshorts and wished I had actual gear for a full day at the water.

A dingo walked straight into our campsite and grabbed a bag of bread off the table. Rangers are serious about food storage rules and the fines are steep. Respect these animals.

Rental companies charge you for every scratch. The branches on inland tracks are relentless and the salt spray on the beach eats paint. Protect the vehicle or pay later.

Everyone goes to Lake McKenzie and the Maheno Shipwreck. Those are great, but the island has places that barely show up on blogs and they were the highlights of my trip.

Almost got turned away at the barge because I didn't realize Fraser Island requires specific vehicle permits AND camping permits separately. Don't show up without these sorted.
