I always thought cleaning the lint screen was enough. Then I shoved a long brush into the slot and pulled out a felt blanket of lint that had been building up for years. Nearly lost it.

The trap slot was just the beginning. When I disconnected the vent hose behind my dryer, I found enough lint to stuff a pillow. That's where dryer fires actually start.

After brushing everything loose, you need to actually remove it. I tried scooping by hand and gave up after five minutes. A vacuum hose adapter changed everything.

Cleaned everything inside only to find my exterior vent flap was clogged shut with lint and a bird nest. Cool. That's a fire hazard AND a pest problem in one.

I had no idea these existed until after my scare. A ten-dollar sensor on the vent line would have told me months earlier that airflow was restricted. Prevention beats panic.

Half the battle is producing less lint to begin with. Switched from liquid fabric softener to wool dryer balls and the amount of lint in my trap dropped noticeably within a week.

Never occurred to me that catching lint during the wash cycle means less ends up in the dryer. Started using mesh laundry bags for lint-heavy loads and the difference was immediate.

Once I moved my dryer to clean the vent, I saw the floor underneath. Horrifying. Years of dust, lint, and mystery crumbs baked onto the surface. Needed specific tools to deal with that mess.

After my dryer scare I put a fire extinguisher next to the washing machine and felt stupid for not doing it years earlier. Laundry rooms are the number two spot for house fires. Let that sink in.

Once I deep-cleaned everything, I made a quarterly maintenance checklist so I never end up in that situation again. These are the tools that make it a 20-minute job instead of a weekend project.
