You may or may not have been alive in 1971, but I bet you still know some of these top hits from the year! Some of these songs may be on your parents playlist or some you may know from being in movies. If you don't know these songs, you should, 1971 ...
Joy to the World by Three Dog Night was Billboards number 1 song for 1971! I am guessing that my mother never really listened to this version, or she wouldn't have let me have the little 45 vinyl record. I would guess most people know the chorus, “Joy to the world, All the boys and girls, Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea, Joy to you and me”. Many of us still know every word!

If you were a teenager in the 70's I bet there was a poster of Rod Stewart on your wall. He was a heartthrob back then. Billboard list his song Maggie May as number 2 for the year 1971. I knew the song even as a little girl from hearing it on the radio, but it was to risque for my mother to have let me have the record back then. As an FYI, I still have this song on playlist and love it!
Maggie May song by Rod Stewart
Carole King was a storyteller in song! In 1971 she put oy It's Too Late and it seems to be a sad tale of a relationship just burning out. In 1971, this song was Billboards number 3 song of the year! I think I still have her Tapestry CD somewhere. She does have some pretty sad songs, so not something I remember listening to a lot. At least not this song, it would have been way over my head as a child.

Ok, Billboard has One Bad Apple by The Osmonds as number 4 song for the year 1971, But I hardly remember it. I just listened to it and the chorus just barely seems familiar. It may have been a hit back then and I just didn't like it and still don't. The Osmonds were hot back then and I watched their tv show every week, but guess they had some songs I just didn't remember.

The Bee Gees were hot, hot, hot is the 70's. If you didn't know who they were, you must have lived under a rock. How Do You Mend a Broken Heart was Billboards number 5 song for the year 1971. While this is not my favorite Bee Gees song, I do know every word.
How Can You Mend A Broken Heart song by Bee Gees
Billboards number 6 hit for 1971 was Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian) Paul Revere & The Raiders. By the song title I had no idea what the song was, but when I listened to it, I do remember it. I suspect I would have recognized if it had said Cherokee People. I was probably just to young to really like a song like that in 1971.

Coming in at number 7 on Billboards top hits of 1971 was Donny Osmond's Go Away Little Girl. Yes, I do know every word to this song. I watched the Osmond Show every week and had several of their 45's. If you don't know what a 45 is…nevermind! How popular were the Osmond's? They had 2 Billboard hits in the top 7 songs for 1971.

John Denver had a weekly TV show in the mid 70's and I think every family in the USA watched. One of his best know songs was Billboards number 8 for 1971 Take Me Home, Country Roads. I still know every word as I probably listened to this 45 a million times of my little spinner. John Denver was loved by all ages as he was funny, wholesome and a great story teller.

Oh my who could ever forget The Temptations. The soulful music, coordinated dance moves and suites to the nines. Just My Imagination was the 9th song of 1971 according to Billboard Music Charts! Do you remember them on The Ed Sullivan Show or American Bandstand?

Knock Three Times Tony Orlando And Dawn was Billboards number 10 song for 1971. I had kind of forgotten this song, but as soon as I saw the title I remembered every word. I remember watching the Tony Orlando Show when I was little. I think we were all happier people back then, because so many music shows that were funny and easy going!

Janis Joplin was gone way to soon. She had a way of telling a story with her music. No fancy tweaking her vocals, nothing fake, just all out natural singing made her a huge hit! She was raw for that time. We need more like her Me and Bobby McGee was number 11 on Billboard Hits for 1971.

Ok, I listened to I'm Tired of Being Alone by Al Green and I don't really remember it. It was the number 12 hit song of 1971 and I remember Al Green, but this song just isn't one I know.

Want Ads by Honey Cone was number 13 on Billboards 1971. This is another song I don't remember and Honey Cone, doesn't ring a bell. Honestly if I just heard the song I would have thought it was a Jackson 5 song. After watching the video I can say they were pretty ladies with amazing voices and dressed. Yes, they had all their parts covered up and didn't have to be ½ dressed to get a Billboard Hit!

1971's number 14 song of the year was Smiling Faces Sometimes by The Undisputed Truth. I didn't remember this song by the title, but I do after hearing it. They were another group with outfits to the nines! I really do love the clothes of the 70's.

I would have thought this song would have ranked higher than some of the others…I remember it. Coming in at number 15 on 1971's Billboard Charts ‘Treat Her Like A Lady’ by Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose. While I know the song and lyrics, I didn't remember the name of the group.

The Rolling Stones Brown Sugar was the number 16 song for 1971. Even though I know the song, I'm sure I know the right words to most of it. LOL The Rolling Stones set a precedence for all other bands to follow. Mick Jagger may not have the best voice, but he still had a way about him and is who people will think of for years to come when you say OG RockStar!

Carole King wrote ‘You’ve Got a Friend' and it made James Taylor a hit! In fact it came in at number 17 for 1971. Not sure if this happens to everyone, but I always get goose bumps when I hear the original of this song. It has been remade by so many people, but never as good at Carole or James.

In 1971, Billboard Charts ranked Mr. Big Stuff by Jean Knight at number 18 for the year! This is a song that many of you may not remember from 1971, but you have probably heard it in commercials, movies or even The Simpsons!
