Skincare to Treat and Prevent Acne

Purple Star emoji 22 items
The products I use consistently to treat and prevent acne! Focus on a good sunscreen, cleanser, and retinoid. Here's how I would build a routine:

Morning: Hypochlorous Acid, Hydrating serum,  One active (Azaleic Acid, Mandelic Acid, etc.), Sunscreen
Night: Active Cleanser (or gentle cleanser if you're experiencing irritation), Retinoid, Moisturizer

You can add more products once your skin has adjusted to the retinoid, but if things are starting to work, don't change anything. If there's anything I've learned from seeing dermatologists since high school, it's to keep things simple!

Cleansers

Even though I have oily skin, I've found that cleansing once a day with an active cleanser is best for me! Some of the products below target the overgrowth of harmful bacteria, one of the factors contributing to acne.

The only benzoyl peroxide I've tried that doesn't sting or burn! Start with leaving it on for 30 seconds and working your way up to 1 -2 minutes 1x a day.
Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser | Benzoyl Peroxide Treatment

I LOVE sulfur since it can help with fungal and bacterial breakouts. This one doesn't smell at all AND is a great alternative to benzoyl peroxide. Same rules: 30 seconds as a mask and work your way up to 1-2 minutes 1x a day before rinsing.
EradiKate® 3% Sulfur Daily Foaming Cleanser

Here's a GREAT option if you're experiencing irritation or dryness from the retinoid or other active ingredients. It's super gentle, cost-effective, and doesn't leave my skin feeling dry. However, once your skin adjusts and is no longer irritated, us...
Vanicream™ Gentle Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin

SkinObsessed profile picture
Here's another GREAT option for a gentle cleanser. The bottle is HUGE so it's going to last forever + feel free to use it as a body cleanser too! I would use this on days when your skin is feeling dry or irritated or even before shaving. Otherwise, t...
Glycerin Cleanser For The Face & Body - Gleanser

Hypochlorous Acid

One of my ALL TIME favorite, MOST versatile products out there! It targets the bacteria that contribute to breakouts. Instead of cleansing in the morning, I spray this, let it dry, and then continue with the rest of my routine.

Other use cases: Spray on the face post-workout to prevent breakouts, armpits to reduce body odor, back for bacne, razor blades or pillowcases to clean, clothes to reduce odor, etc. It can even help treat eczema rashes! The use cases are seemingly en...

All the options below are great, so pick whichever is most convenient or cheapest!

Prequel truly is one of the most credible yet cost-effective brands out there! I like how this product sprays a finer mist than the others. Spray in the mornings instead of cleansing, post-workout, etc. Make sure to let it dry completely before apply...
Universal Skin Solution Hypochlorous Acid Spray

SkinObsessed profile picture
Another great option! Spray in the mornings instead of cleansing , post-workout, etc. See the section description other use cases (there's A TON). Same rules: let it dry completely before applying other actives. If you encounter excessive dryness, la...
SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray with Hypochlorous Acid

SkinObsessed profile picture
I also like this brand since their mission is primarily acne care! Same rules: let it dry completely before applying other actives. If you encounter excessive dryness, layer a hydrating serum 30 sec-1 min after spraying. Look at the section descripti...
Trust Me on This Hypochlorous Acid Spray

SkinObsessed profile picture
This is the brand I find myself using the most since I have amazon prime. Don't be alarmed that the product says it's for eczema, it's just hypochlorous acid! Same rules: let it dry completely before applying other actives. If you encounter excessive...
SkinSmart Antimicrobial Eczema Therapy

Retinoids/Retinol

There's a lot of complex science here, but simply put, retinoids are going to change the way your skin behaves for the better! This is why (when tolerated), they can treat cystic breakouts, closed comedones, dark spots, wrinkles, etc. My skin can tol...

Start by cleansing, applying the retinoid or retinol product, and moisturizing. That's it! You can add other complementary products later if your skin tolerates the retinoid well.

Also, retinoids are in the “most active” form and therefore are hardest to tolerate. If you're experiencing unbearable peeling or redness that isn't improving, try one of the retinol products I've included below. If you want something even stronger, ...

I use a prescription version of adapalene (0.3%), but this over-the-counter version works just as well! It's actually THE ONLY over-the-counter retinoid, so it can take some getting used to.

Start by applying 3x a week at night only. Cleanse, use, and moisturize. If your skin isn't peeling too much, dry, or red, go ahead and increase the frequency to every other day. Eventually, aim for 5-7x per week for maximum benefits (again, nighttim...

You also HAVE to wear sunscreen every morning because a retinoid can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Luckily, I have some sunscreens that I LOVE under the sunscreen section.
Differin Acne Treatment Gel, 30 Day Supply

This is also adapalene (the only over-the-counter retinoid), but it's made by la roche posay. I love a lot of products from this brand, so if it's more convenient for you get this one!

Same rules apply: Start by applying 3x a week at night only. Cleanse, use, and moisturize. If your skin isn't peeling too much, dry, or red, go ahead and increase the frequency to every other day. Eventually, aim for 5-7x per week for maximum benefit...

Roc is one of the OGs when it comes to retinol! This product won’t be as strong as the adapalene, but it can be a good starting point, especially if you have sensitive, dry skin. Cleanse, apply, and moisturize. If you tolerate it well (no more peelin...

This is a retinaldehyde product, so just think of it as stronger than retinol but not as strong as a retinoid. There are some amazing hydrating ingredients in here that could help you better tolerate the redness and peeling that often bother beginner...

At night, cleanse, apply, and moisturize. Once you can tolerate this 5-7x a week, go ahead and switch to the adapalene product. However, if your skin isn’t sensitive and on the oilier side, you can probably skip this step and start with the adapalene...

Moisturizers/Hydration

You are DEFINITELY going to need a moisturizer at night if you are just starting a retinoid product, and you may need one in the morning, depending on your skin type (oily types may not need a moisturizer in the morning).

These are some of my favorite hydrating serums, light moisturizers, and even barrier creams! For us acne-prone individuals, I love a hydrating serum or gel moisturizer in the morning and either a light moisturizer or barrier cream at night (depending...

I've been loving this in the mornings, especially after spraying with my hypochlorous acid! It hydrates great, doesn't feel super heavy or sticky, and the bottle is huge. You can pat in into your skin with your fingers or use a cotton pad.
Hydrating Milky Toner with Snow Mushroom - 12 oz.

To no one's surprise, I'm recommending prequel…again! The star ingredient here is polyglutamic acid, which some people find works better than hyaluronic acid at plumping and hydrating. Rub into the skin after cleansing or after spraying with hypochlo...
Multi-Quench Polyglutamic Acid Serum

My FAVORITE gel moisturizer. It literally melts into the skin and is so so light; Perfect for oily, acne-prone skin! You can layer this under sunscreen or after you apply your retinoid at night. The zinc in here may also help fight off acne-causing b...

This is AN AMAZING barrier cream. This is much heavier than the other options, but it can REALLY HELP you tolerate a retinoid and manage a damaged skin barrier. Don't be afraid of a heavier cream if you're acne-prone because a damaged skin barrier ca...
Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream

Here's another great option for a barrier cream! It's on the heavier side, but again, restoring your skin barrier is important for managing acne long term. Apply on days your skin feels irritated or after applying your retinoid. You can also target s...

Sunscreen (Tinted, Pore-Blurring)

You NEED to be wearing sunscreen every day, especially if you are acne-prone! It's going to prevent your hyperpigmentation from worsening, prevent premature skin aging, and reduce your risk of skin cancer. Also, many acne ingredients can make your sk... Remember the general rule: 2 finger lengths for the face.

Here are some of my favorites, but finding your favorite sunscreen definitely takes some experimenting. As long as you're wearing it every day, it doesn't matter if it's a mineral or chemical formula.

SkinObsessed profile picture
This is the sunscreen I use the MOST. It makes my skin tone look so even, AND it blurs my pores!! I also love how it's a super gentle, mineral formula.

Definitely layer a moisturizer under this, or it may be too drying. It also has a silky, silicone texture, which I find looks GREAT on oily skin types, BUT it may not be everyone's preference.
Face Prime & Protect SPF 40 Tinted

SkinObsessed profile picture
Another one of my MOST USED sunscreens! It's also a mineral formula that's super gentle, but it's more hydrating than the CoTZ “prime and protect” product. You can honestly skip moisturizer if you're using this in the morning or layer it under the “p...
Face Moisture SPF 35 Lightly Tinted

SkinObsessed profile picture
Another gentle, tinted option that also BLURS the pores. It makes the skin look amazing, but you may need a hydrating serum or moisturizer underneath. It has a very silky texture and blends great!
Mineral Tinted Crème SPF 30

This is a great hydrating option with NO white cast, thanks to its chemical filters. This can also double as your moisturizer. If you can't stand mineral formulas, give this one a try.
