Rain, sleet, a random 15-degree cold snap — my first cheap timer cracked after one ice storm. These actually held up through a full Midwest winter without skipping a single cycle.

Crawling under the tree every night to unplug it was scratching up my arms and knocking off ornaments. These sit between the wall and the plug so you never touch the tree cord again.

Some nights I was already in bed and realized the lights were still blazing. A smart plug let me kill them from under the covers without getting up.

Running outside in December to plug and unplug yard decorations was the worst part of my evening routine. Weatherproof smart plugs ended that immediately.

Behind my entertainment center was a rats nest of holiday candle lights and window decorations all plugged into one overloaded strip. A timed power strip cleaned that up overnight.

Realized halfway through decorating last year that I had one outdoor outlet and seven things to plug in. The right splitters and cords kept everything running without daisy-chaining disasters.

Timers work great until daylight saving shifts everything by an hour and your lights turn on while it's still bright out. Light sensors solved that problem permanently.
