Prepare your skin for tanning by scrubbing gently to remove old skin. This gives the tan an even surface to adhere to and helps it last longer. Avoid lotion based scrubs because they can leave residue on the skin and prevent and even tan.

Apply a good moisturizer (preferably one that’s free of oils) in the days leading up to your tanning session. Avoid oily lotions or scrubs right before you tan, as they can block the sun from reaching your skin evenly.

Water that is too hot is a no-go. Anything that dries your skin out, affects your tan negatively. Keep the water temperature between 90–100°F (32–38°C).
