When the weather outside is awful but nobody wants to spend the whole day at home, these are some of my favorite indoor outings around Boston — from bowling and mini golf to a few less obvious ideas.
Such a unique Boston experience — you walk inside a three-story stained-glass globe from 1935. It’s quick, fascinating and completely indoors, so it’s perfect for a bad-weather day with kids.
Step Inside the Mapparium
One of the coolest free things to do with kids around Boston. You can watch the Bruins practice up close at Warrior Ice Arena — just check the schedule before you go because practices can change or be cancelled.
Watch the Bruins Practice for Free
A fun one when the weather is miserable — 18 holes of glow-in-the-dark mini golf with quirky monsters, plus an arcade if the kids still have energy afterward.
Play Glow-in-the-Dark Mini Golf
A surprisingly fun outing with kids — UMass is famous for its campus food, and anyone can eat at the dining halls. It’s all-you-can-eat with tons of choices, so everyone can find something they like.
Have Lunch at a UMass Dining Hall
A fun old-school bowling spot hidden underneath Needham Center — small, casual and perfect for getting out of the house with the kids when the weather is awful.
Go Bowling at Needham Bowlaway
A great all-in-one option when you need to get everyone out of the house — bowling, arcade games, go-karts and more, all under one roof.
Spend the Day at Apex Entertainment
Such a fun hidden gem — kids can race slot cars on huge tracks, and you can rent everything you need. A great change from the usual arcade.
Race Slot Cars at Modelville Hobby
A very different kind of indoor outing — pick a room, put on the safety gear and smash things together. Especially fun for older kids who have outgrown the usual indoor play places.
Smash Things at Just Smash It
Even if your kids aren’t huge basketball fans, there’s plenty to do here — interactive exhibits, shooting hoops and lots of basketball history.
Basketball Hall of Fame
Colorful, interactive and much more fun than a traditional museum. A good one to pair with the other Springfield Museums while you’re there.
The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum
Original picture-book art, a hands-on art studio and a great library. A quieter option for a rainy day, especially for kids who like drawing and books.
