The OG Hill House haunting story (not like the updated one) in glorious black and white. So spooky and wonderful you could almost watch it with a kid.
The Haunting - Apple TV
Starts with Autumn leaves blowing around on a crisp fall night and classic narration, adds loads of charm and—- it’s a musical.
That’s right, the monsters actually sing songs curated by Danny Elfman.

Watch Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas | Disney+
Hilarious— if mildly sexist— 80s flick about a group of misfit dudes becoming paranormal exterminators.
It’s incredibly fun and has a fantastic cast (Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, etc)
Just close your eyes during the library scene an...
Ghostbusters - Apple TV
This movie isn’t scary at all. It’s a love story told using Tim Burton’s signature aesthetic— bright 60s colors, stripes, and dashes of comedy. It’s actually a very family friendly watch.
Watch Edward Scissorhands | Disney+
A non-gory satire about the relationship between many black people and white people in America. It’s full of tension and mystery.
There’s a ton of profanity, which is mostly hilarious and well timed comic relief.
You’ll never look at a teacup the s...
Get Out
Yes, original black-and-white Night of the Living Dead from 1968 does have zombies, but virtually no zombie makeup.
They are more like slow, stiff dead people just roaming around. It does have plenty of thrills!
The lack of color takes some of the c...
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
This is light, non-supernatural fun horror. Actually, it’s a murder mystery more than anything.
It’s full of classic horror film lore, snappy dialogue, and comedy—and be warned, there’s some stabby gore.
Watch Scream (HBO)
Not all horror movies have demons! Signs is an edge-of-your-seat, squeaky clean movie about aliens and crop circles, but it’s a first class thriller.
Not a single dull moment in this movie.
Signs - Apple TV
Pssst— you can get this for free on the Hoopla App! This is a found footage flick that begins with a going away party, but after a while it takes a hard turn into a full-blown brilliant creature feature like nothing I’ve ever seen.
I won’t give too ...
Cloverfield - Apple TV
I’ve seen this movie so many times and it absolutely never gets old, because:
Two Coreys.
The Santa Cruz Pier.
Joel Schumacher’s gothic taste meets the 80s.
It’s funny, the soundtrack is awesome, and you’ll never forget the scene with the saxophone...
The Lost Boys - Apple TV
We film nerds looooooove this one.
A shapeshifting monster/alien invades a group of researchers in Antarctica— and they don’t know who is real and who is part of the monster.
Stars Kurt Russell and Kurt Russell’s beard.
Has GREAT practical effect...
The Thing - Apple TV
Basically, it’s Jaws, but funnier. And in the desert. With Kevin Bacon. (And Reba)
Watch Tremors | Prime Video
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! This is a squeaky clean, endearing story featuring a family trying to survive, but it doesn’t skimp on thrills.
A Quiet Place - Watch Full Movie on Paramount Plus
The big scare with this movie back in 1999 was that everyone thought it was real. Since we all know it isn’t, that takes a lot of the bite out of it. It’s fun to watch in the fall.
Watch The Blair Witch Project | Prime Video
A serious cat-and-mouse thriller with a deaf/mute author and a tenacious intruder— I don’t want to give it all away, but it’s very rewatchable.
Hush (2016)
A creepy,crime-based thriller— it blends suspense, mild supernatural elements, and a few jump scares— but it’s not over the top.
Watch The Black Phone | Prime Video
Perfection in black and white from Alfred Hitchcock that proves you don’t need buckets of blood to scare people—just a shower curtain and an iconic movie score.
Psycho - Apple TV
FANTASTIC podcast where 3 hosts describe scary movies to people too scared to watch for themselves. It’s so entertaining!
Too Scary; Didn't Watch
There’s no supernatural horror or demons here— it’s sci-fi, but it doesn’t skimp have some solid scares. Expect to be grossed out and see some body horror. It sticks with you for a long time but probably won’t keep you up at night.
Alien
The scariest part of this is that it was made in the height of the “pick me“ 90s. It’s funny, dark, and has mild chills.
