The paints, paper, brushes, and little tools I actually reach for when I paint with gouache. These are the things that help me get smoother coverage, cleaner details, and spend less time fighting with the materials.
Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache
One of my favorite gouache paints when I want rich, opaque color without that plastic acrylic look. The colors are beautifully matte, mix really well, and you can use them thick and bold or dilute them with wate...

Holbein Artists’ Gouache
One of my favorite gouache brands when I want really rich, beautiful color. The paint feels smooth and highly pigmented, and I love the soft matte finish it has once dry.
The colors stay clean when mixed and don’t get that ...

Masterson Sta-Wet Palette
Such a useful little upgrade if you paint with gouache and get annoyed by how quickly your paint dries out on the palette.
The damp sponge underneath helps keep the paint workable much longer, which means I’m not constantl...

Ceramic Mixing Palette
I much prefer a ceramic palette for gouache over plastic. The smooth surface makes colors really easy to mix, it’s easy to see what the paint actually looks like, and dried gouache usually cleans off without much effort.

Princeton Velvetouch Brushes
These are such a nice match for gouache. They’re soft enough to blend and make smooth strokes, but still have enough spring that I can control the paint and get clean edges and smaller details.

I also really like the handles — they’re comfortable to hold and don’t feel flimsy like some cheaper brushes. You definitely don’t need a huge set either. A couple of rounds and a flat in the sizes you actually use will take you pretty far.
A really good choice if you want to upgrade from basic craft brushes without getting into crazy expensive artist brushes.
Canson XL Watercolor Paper
A really good affordable paper for practicing with gouache. It’s thick enough to handle water without feeling too flimsy, and I like that I don’t feel precious about using it — which makes it much easier to experiment and ...

Strathmore 400 Series Watercolor Paper
A nice step up when I want something a little more substantial than basic practice paper. It handles gouache really well, especially when I’m layering paint or using a bit more water.
The surface has enough te...

Holbein Permanent White Gouache — Large Tube
If you paint with gouache, buy a bigger tube of white. Seriously. White disappears so much faster than every other color because you’re constantly using it to lighten mixes, adjust opacity, soften colors,...
