Healthy eating while traveling is hard enough without adding the gluten-free requirement. Motorcycle travel is an added degree of difficulty.

Convenience Store Finds

You've stopped for gas, and you're starving. Burritos aren't going to cut it if you're gluten free.

I'll grab the prosciutto wrapped mozzarella, a package of almonds, pistachios or cashews, maybe pickles or olives, and some dark chocolate and sit on the curb in front of my bike to eat my gas station charcuterie. It's one of my favorite meals, espec...

Gluten free or just want to make better choices? I was excited when I saw these the first time. Are they just like eating a pop tart? No, but they're a great choice when you want something quick and simple that won't kill you.

Breakfast, lunch, whatever. When everyone else is having a burrito, you can have a birria pupusa at Maverik. Throw it in the microwave, and you have a decent warm meal that doesn't feel like you're settling for some stupid gluten-free option.

The pictures don't show it, but Freddy's has an excellent lettuce wrap option for their burgers. They ask if it's already or choice and make it differently based on your response. They may or may not have a separate fryer for fries and breaded food, ...

Wendy's chili is made from gluten-free ingredients, so consider a chili-cheese baked potato. Yum! I've also been very happy with any burger on a lettuce wrap there.

I miss the bread at Subway, but at least you can order a salad or protein bowl. I have seen Subways in the most remote oddball places as well as many convenience stores and gas stations. It's almost always an option that everyone can agree on.

I never feel like I'm missing out at Qdoba. Just ask for corn tortillas instead of flour.

Ignore the mac and cheese in the one photo - that's a no-go. Grilled chicken options are good as well as salads with grilled chicken. Ask about add-ins like croutons or crispy gluten strips.

Great about being very clear on what is gluten free. Amazing hot food/salad bar. Not cheap, but good food with little worry about making a choice that will complicate your ride.

After you've filled the tank with less expensive gasoline, drop in to Sam's for grocery store sushi. It can be a great option, but there are a few things to watch out for, first thing being soy sauce. There is some without wheat, but that's not comm...

Restaurants that don't scare me

Going out for dinner isn't as enjoyable as it used to be in my pre-gluten free days. I hate going somewhere and paying restaurant prices for something that isn't really what I want.

Beau Jo's has an incredible gluten-free cauliflower pizza crust. You'll pay for it, but if you're craving pizza and there's one near by, I highly recommend it.

I call this “Meat on a Stick" (Something About Mary reference). There is so much to eat at a Brazilian Steakhouse. Expensive, but it's nice to know that if someone asks where I want to go for a special meal, hands down, it's a Brazilian Steakhouse.

Are you in northern Colorado or Cheyenne? Find a Wing Shack and just the traditional wings. I like the Jamaican Jerk dry rub, which is gluten free. In fact, I buy the exact same spice mix that they use at Savory Spice. The chips and fries are rub to...
