Annual San Francisco fairs, markets, and festivals to know about
San Francisco’s annual fairs reflect the city’s deep cultural roots, artistic spirit, and love of community celebration. Each year, neighborhoods transform into lively hubs of music, food, and tradition. Spring kicks off with the vibrant Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown, celebrating Japanese culture with taiko drumming, traditional dance, and a colorful Grand Parade. Around the same time, the San Francisco International Film Festival brings filmmakers and cinephiles together for screenings, premieres, and panel discussions, highlighting global cinema. In late May, the Mission District comes alive for Carnaval San Francisco, a high-energy celebration of Latin American and Caribbean cultures filled with elaborate costumes, live music, and one of the city’s most dynamic parades. Summer is peak festival season. San Francisco Pride draws hundreds of thousands to Civic Center for one of the world’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations, featuring a massive parade, performances, and community activism. North Beach hosts the historic North Beach Festival, blending Italian heritage, art vendors, food stalls, and live entertainment. Meanwhile, Golden Gate Park becomes a destination for music lovers during Outside Lands, a three-day festival combining major musical acts with curated local food, wine, and art. The beloved Stern Grove Festival also runs throughout the summer, offering free outdoor concerts in a scenic natural amphitheater. As fall arrives, the city continues celebrating with Folsom Street Fair, an internationally known adult street fair in SoMa, and Oktoberfest by the Bay, a waterfront celebration of German beer, music, and Bavarian traditions. October closes out with Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, a beloved free multi-stage music festival in Golden Gate Park that attracts massive crowds and nationally recognized artists. Finally, as the holiday season approaches, seafood lovers gather at Fisherman’s Wharf for the Fisherman's Wharf Crab Festival, celebrating Dungeness crab season with food vendors, cooking demonstrations, and live entertainment. Together, these annual events showcase San Francisco’s diversity, creativity, and strong neighborhood identities, offering something for nearly every interest — from cultural heritage and activism to music, film, food, and community gathering.
