ADHD & Autism Life Hacks That Actually Work (From a Mom Who Gets It)

I'm a 54 year old mom of four, and I have both autism and ADHD.  Over the years, I've found little tools and products that help me survive the chaos - whether it's time blindness, sensory overload, or just getting through the day without crying in a laundry basket.  Here are some of my favorite life-savers.

Use this for cleaning sprints, reminding myself to eat, even giving my brain a countdown before transitions.  No loud ticking, just a big red disk that slowly disappears.  A must-have for time blindness!

A favorite way to calm down after a long overstimulating day.  It's like a hug without the social interaction.  Get one that's about 10% of your body weight - I like the ones with a soft, minky cover.

For sensory overload in the grocery store, or when my kids are all talking at once (just kidding - I love when they are all home).  These look sleek, don't block everything, and they're comfy enough to wear all day.

My brain can't hold ANYTHING anymore, unless I dump it somewhere.  And my screenshots and notes are out of control.  These apps let me track tasks, make checklists, and break big things into tiny steps.  ADHD-friendly, customizable and kind of fun. (And I can actually find stuff later.)

If you remember things in the shower, or by the pool (lucky you), but forget it when you finally get out.  These stick to the wall and let me scribble down thoughts while I shampoo.  Great for by kitchen sink too.  Total game changer.

My new favorite work pants.  If it's scratchy, stiff, or tight, I'm not wearing it (leggings don't count). Stretchy clothes that still let me feel like a professional.  The Waffle Pants are my fave and don't make me feel like I want to crawl out of my skin.

Future Me is way more likely to function if things are labeled clearly. I label drawers, bins, shelves, even the “random junk” basket. Bonus: it feels super satisfying and productive. These label makers are way more handy than printing labels on my p... If I use up all my energy coming up with labels, I just assign one of my kids the task of putting the labels where I want them.

Sometimes shoes make it to my closet, sometimes they don't. I keep a small standalone shoe organizer by the side of my bed for those shoes that aren't ready to go in the closet yet, but hate having to crawl under the bed to find them if I leave them ...

It might be the motion, it might be the hum but a ceiling fan is a must for me.  And getting one with a remote is a game changer. No more getting out of bed to turn it off or on or change the fan speed!  Bonus tip - a little velcro on the remote and your bedside table will keep you from losing the remote and going back to the dark ages where you have to get out of bed to control your light.

Can't sit still? No problem!  For my son with ADHD sitting at the computer was torture.  So I took away his chair and his performance improved greatly, but my mom guilt increased.  Using an exercise ball for a chair is great because it helps him focus (don't ask me how) and saves my floor from him constantly leaning back or scooting it around.  Choose your ball size based on the height of the person that will be using it.

Never pull the wrong cord again.  It doesn't matter how long I've had the fan, I always pull the wrong cord (unless I have a remote!) So these adorable little pulls, while not Pinterest perfect, make sure I don't pull the wrong darn chain EVERY SINGLE TIME!

This app has seriously saved me from forgetting (or double-taking) my meds more times than I can count. The interface is simple, which is huge when my brain is overstimulated, and the reminders are gentle but effective. It just works—and that’s rare.
