Acne Control & DIY

What actually cleared my skin, plus the two DIY recipes that cost almost nothing. Benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil, and a clay mask you mix with apple cider vinegar instead of water. Patch test the DIY ones, and don't stack them with the acids in the s...

What I use at night to get sunscreen and makeup off without stripping my skin. Fragrance-free, soap-free, and my face never feels tight after. It won't touch waterproof mascara, so you'll need a separate step for that.
SOS Gentle Hydrating Gel Cleanser + Makeup Remover

Benzoyl peroxide is what actually works on the deep painful spots, and this is the gentlest version I've used. Leave it on for a minute before you rinse. It bleaches fabric, so white towels and white pillowcases only. I learned that the expensive way...
PanOxyl Creamy Acne Wash - 4% Benzoyl Peroxide

The cleanser that stopped my breakouts. Twice a day, morning and night, and nothing else changed. Cheap, boring, and at every drugstore in Canada. It's stripping if your skin is already dry, so this one is for oily skin.
Foaming Facial Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin

A few drops mixed into my moisturizer, morning and night, keeps everything calm. One bottle lasts months, so it's the cheapest thing in my routine. Never put it on neat, it will burn, and patch test before you commit.

Dark Spots & Even Tone

The slow ones. Nothing here works in a week, and anything that promises to is lying. Serums, a brightening bar, and a glycolic toner I also use on my underarms. Give any of them two months before you judge.

My before-an-event trick and my after-a-late-night trick. Fifteen minutes and the puffiness is visibly down. It's temporary, so treat these as a moment rather than a treatment.
Faded Under Eye Brightening & Clearing Eye Masks

Nightly exfoliant that brightened my whole face, and I use it on my underarms for darkness too. That second use is the tip nobody gives you. Don't layer it the same night as PanOxyl or a scrub, alternate nights instead.
Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating and Brightening Daily Toner

Brightening in a bar, which makes it the easiest step in the whole routine because you just use it in the shower. The two pack lasts months. Let it dry between uses or it turns to mush.
Faded Brightening & Cleansing Body Bar for Uneven Skin Tone (2 Pack)

Light, sinks in fast, and it's what I use on my arms and chest where the sun got me. No stickiness under clothes, which is why I keep buying it. It's a slow fade and not a fix, so give it two months.
Niacinamide 5% Face and Body Emulsion for Dark Spots & Uneven Tone

The serum that actually faded my dark spots. Unscented and gentle enough that it never stung, which is rare in this category. It's slow by design, so don't judge it before two months.

Body Texture & Bumpy Skin

For rough arms, bumpy skin and the body care nobody posts about. Two scrubs, an exfoliating bar and a glycolic body lotion. Pick one scrub, not both, and never use a scrub the same day as the glycolic.

Mix it with diluted apple cider vinegar in a glass or plastic bowl, never metal, and use a plastic spoon. Once a week. My skin has never looked better than the day after. It pulsates and goes tight while it dries, which is normal, but take it off at ...
Indian healing clay masks

Shake it, then use it in place of the water in the clay mask. That one swap is what makes the difference. Dilute it, never put it on your face straight, and patch test first.
Organic Apple Cider Vinegar – Raw & Unfiltered Choice

Rich but it absorbs fast, and the warm vanilla is the reason I reach for it over anything else. Cheap enough to use generously, which matters for body lotion. It's scented, so don't layer it under a perfume you care about.
Shea Better 24H Moisture Lotion Vanilla

The one that smoothed the backs of my arms. Physical exfoliant plus ceramides and niacinamide, so it buffs without leaving you raw. It's the priciest thing on this list, but a bar lasts months.
Butta Drop Refill Whipped Oil Body Cream with Tropical Oils + Shea Butter

The one that smoothed the backs of my arms. Physical exfoliant plus ceramides and niacinamide, so it buffs without leaving you raw. It's the priciest thing in this section, but a bar lasts months.
Nécessaire The Body Exfoliant Bar - In-Shower KP Treatment

The gentler of the two scrubs on this list, and what I use when my skin is already irritated. Rich enough that I barely need lotion after. Pick this one or the AHA sugar scrub, you don't need both.
Body Polishing Scrub

Sugar plus acid, so it exfoliates two ways and does more in one use than a plain scrub. Once or twice a week is the limit. It makes the shower slippery, so be careful getting out.
Sugar Body Scrub with AHA

2% niacinamide in a body wash, so you're treating while you're washing and it costs you no extra time. Fragrance-free, and good for back and chest breakouts. It's a maintainer rather than a fixer, so pair it with something stronger if things are bad.
Naturium The Purifier Niacinamide Serum Body Wash

Glycolic acid for your body, which is the step most people skip entirely. Best thing I've used on rough arms and thighs, and you can pick it up at Shoppers. Don't use it the same day as a scrub or you'll overdo it.

SPF & Daily Hydration

Daily sunscreen with no purple cast, a glowy one for going out, and a stick for reapplying at 2pm. Plus the two body lotions I actually finish. Sunscreen is the only thing on this whole list that prevents dark spots instead of fading them.

Amanda Kristal profile picture
No purple cast, which is the whole reason it's on this list, and it doubles as a makeup primer. Mineral SPF 40, daily, all year. It's the one sunscreen I've found that doesn't grey me out.
Mineral Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40

My tea tree base and my everything-lotion. Two drops of tea tree stirred in, twice a day, and it keeps my acne quiet. 500ml means I never ration it. Plain and unglamorous, and that's the point.
Life Brand Lightweight Moisturizing Lotion - 500 ml

The glowy sunscreen. SPF 40 with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, so it does more than block sun. This is my going-out SPF. The shimmer is real, so skip it if you want matte.
Glowscreen SPF 40 Face Sunscreen with Hyaluronic Acid + Niacinamide

The reapply-at-2pm stick that lives in my bag. SPF 50, dry oil formula, no greasy feeling, and it goes on over makeup. It's hard to tell how much you've applied with a stick, so do more passes than feel necessary.
