A list of good reads I have enjoyed. Sadly, I don't read much any more - I blame the interwebs. Anyhow, if you are looking for a book to read or gift - these are my recommendations.
Read a chapter each afternoon before cocktails at 5.00pm. Flamboyant and excessive = what is not to love…
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
I think I loved this book, but for a reason beyond my understanding, it never hooked me, and it took me AGES to finish it! Some chapters (especially at the beginning) were tedious and hard for me to get through them... but then there were some chapte...
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
I took this book to read after I had an operation. Don't do that. It will do your head in. When not on drugs it's a great read.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
EVERY pre-teen or teenager should read this or at least see a play of The Lord of the Flies. It may help them understand about bullying.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
I first read this when I was 14 or 15 and it still brings back memories. This book and the Diaries of Adrian Mole are my childhood.
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret
Back in 1998 I heard a 13 year old girl review this book on the radio. I bought it the next day and can honestly say that I loved every minute it. If you have any chance to get your child to read the books before they see the movies - make it happen.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
I have this by my beside table. The witty dialogue is so clever. If you haven't been introduced to Oscar Wilde start with this one. (affiliate link)
The Importance of Being Earnest | Oscar Wilde
The first True Crime novel I ever read. Devouring this book I was hooked on the genre. Truman Capote spent six years researching and interviewing and generally sticking his nose where it didn’t belong, taking literally 8,000 pages of notes before fin...

I just love the way Bill Bryson writes. He relays mind-boggling facts speak for themselves without bogging you down in academic jargon.
A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson
This is the original collection of short stories that birthed a huge body of work around the world’s most famous fictional detective, and you should read it before you die on that basis alone. But if that’s not enough to lure you in, trust me when I ...
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
I was so gripped by the story of the Joads, a family attempting to escape the economic desolation of the Dust Bowl, that I found myself furious that no one had ever told me how damn good it was! Plus, this book will (sadly) have a recurring timelines...
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
This book sums up my childhood. It’s ridiculous, satirical, and comforting all at once – not to mention hilarious! Plus, you’ll finally get to understand all those hip references to taking towels on holiday, and the number forty-two, and that constan...
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
