Things to do
There is so much to see and do in Queensland. Make sure you get out of the big cities and visit the smaller towns.
Your first stop should be the Tourist information centres. The guides can supply you with self-driving maps, book tours for you and generally just give you good up-to-date advice.

This is worth a short detour. It's just amazing.

There are so many waterfalls outside of Cairns. Some have swimming holes and picnic areas.

I have never been disappointed with accommodation stays in QLD - these are the places we have stayed.
Nice hotel. We only stayed one night and left early the next morning - close to the boardwalk. TOP TIP: Restaurants close early during the week.
(Cairns) Hilton Hotel
A great stay. Beds were super comfortable, room was very clean, communication was fantastic. Such a great location. I would recommend for a long or short stay.

We (2 couples and one single) thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Very very good value for money. Location is perfect. We will stay here again when we return. Beds we really comfortable and the showers were heavenly.
(Townsville) Beautiful Modern Luxury
This property definitely lives up to the photos - WOW! Such a unique place to stay - we had the whole church to ourselves! Parking was easy, cafes, pubs etc are just a short walk away and the bed was so comfy! Sally is the ultimate host.

Lots of room in this modern home. Fully equipped kitchen and laundry. Close to the main road - but not too close.

How we got to where we were going
We either fly to Brisbane or Cairns when coming from Perth and collect our hire car the next day.
For flights over 4 hours I like to fly Qantas. Their frequent flyer program is excellent and the service on board is great.

We like East Coast rentals. We like to try different cars than we have at home. Their range is great.

We opted to take the bus from Townsville to Airlie Beach (to connect with the HI ferry). There are no flights direct from Townsville to Hamilton Island so it was either the bus or hire a car. The bus was a brilliant option,
