Jet lag had me up at 5am every day in Phnom Penh. Turned out that was the best thing that happened because the street food scene before 7am is a completely different world than what you see at 10.

Every hostel owner pointed me toward Pub Street for breakfast. Walked ten minutes in any other direction and found places where a full morning meal cost a dollar and tasted ten times better.

Kampot moves slow and breakfast moves even slower. That's the whole point. Found myself spending two hours just sitting by the river eating things I couldn't pronounce but kept ordering.

Battambang barely shows up in breakfast guides and that's criminal. Fewer tourists meant I was usually the only foreigner at these spots, which honestly made the food better because nobody was adjusting flavors for Western palates.

Kep is tiny and sleepy and most people just pass through for the crab market. Staying two nights and eating breakfast by the water turned out to be the most relaxed mornings of my whole trip.

Sihanoukville gets a bad reputation and some of it is deserved. But hit the local neighborhoods at sunrise before the party crowd wakes up and there's genuinely great food hiding in plain sight.

Landed in Cambodia as a strict black coffee person. Left as someone who willingly puts condensed milk in everything. The coffee culture there rewired my brain and I'm not even mad about it.

Couldn't leave Cambodia without stuffing my suitcase with pantry stuff. These are the things I actually kept using once I got home instead of letting them collect dust in the back of my cabinet.

Dragging myself to street stalls at 5:30am in tropical heat required some practical stuff I didn't think about before leaving. Learned through sweaty, miserable trial and error so you don't have to.

Pointing and smiling works fine but learning five phrases in Khmer opened doors that stayed closed for other tourists. Vendors gave me extra portions, secret menu items, and genuine smiles instead of polite tolerance.
