The dorm mattress was so thin my daughter could feel the metal bed frame through it. She sent me a photo and I honestly thought it was a joke. These toppers actually add enough cushion to make it feel like a real bed.

Regular twin sheets do not fit twin XL beds. My daughter learned this the hard way when her fitted sheet popped off at 2am and she texted me like I could fix it from 400 miles away. These actually stay put.

My daughter brought her pillow from home and it was completely flat within a month from the humidity and daily use. College kids sleep weird hours and need pillows that can handle being used at 2pm and 2am equally.

Dorm thermostats have two settings: surface of the sun or walk-in freezer. There is no in between. My daughter's room was arctic from November through March, and her thin comforter from home was useless by week two of fall.

Nobody wants to think about what happened on a dorm mattress before their kid got there. I try not to. A waterproof protector goes on first, before the topper, before the sheets. Non-negotiable. Just do it.

The bed is only part of the problem. Dorm hallways are loud at midnight, the streetlight outside shines directly into the window, and roommates have different sleep schedules. These little things fixed the environment around the bed.
