Exploring Vienna on foot was one of my favorite things, especially in winter. I strolled through squares, past palaces, and along quiet streets, taking in the sights, sounds, and cozy atmosphere of the city.

Hofburg
Schönbrunn felt much calmer once I moved away from the entrance and into the gardens. Inside the palace, the rooms are very detailed, and I found it easier to enjoy them when I knew a bit about who lived there and why the rooms mattered.

Stephansplatz is always busy, but stepping inside the cathedral immediately changes the atmosphere. The city looks so different from higher points, it gives you a better sense of Vienna beyond the streets.

Belvedere Palace
This area felt very different from the imperial palaces, more modern and relaxed. I liked stopping here between sightseeing because there’s space to sit, walk around, and take a break without feeling rushed.

A calm green space close to the center. I’d recommend visiting on warmer days. I was there in winter and it felt quite cold, but I can imagine it being much more enjoyable in spring or summer when you can actually sit and walk around comfortably.
Stadtpark
Even before going inside, the elevated entrance stood out to me. From there, the view toward the opera area is very photogenic, and the building itself feels elegant without being overwhelming.
Albertina
This area felt cozy and lived-in, with small streets and older buildings. I enjoyed wandering here without a plan, especially because it’s quieter than the main tourist routes.

A long shopping street that’s more about observing everyday city life than just shopping. I found it useful to walk through when transitioning between sightseeing and more relaxed parts of the city.

Christmas markets
Visiting Vienna in winter meant spending a lot of time at the Christmas markets. They felt cozy despite the cold, especially in the evenings, and were a nice way to warm up while walking between sights.
This one felt the most festive to me, especially after dark with the lights and the large square. I went ice skating there, and it was truly magical, even though it was busy, the atmosphere made it worth stopping and soaking it all in.
Rathausplatz
The setting in front of the palace made this market feel calmer and more spacious. It was less rushed than the central ones, which made it easier to walk around despite the cold.
Weihnachtsmarkt Schloss Schönbrunn
Smaller and more intimate compared to others. I liked how the palace in the background gave it a quieter, more elegant feel, especially in the evening.
Belvedere Palace
Very central and always lively. I found it convenient to stop here while sightseeing, even though it was one of the busier markets.
