Fantasy

I’m a big fantasy fan. But at the same time, I don’t love a book that’s too long and too elaborate. These are shorter books that can be gateways to a LOT more.

It’ll get you back into reading because: It’s faeries, but not as you know them. Maas does a wonderful job at moulding and crafting a stunning world, and you’re sucked right into it. And it’s the beginning of a series, so if you like this one, there’...

It’ll get you back into reading because: It’s short, it’s a brilliant introduction to this magical world if you haven’t already been swept away by it, and it’s a comforting book you can come back to if you haven’t been reading for a while.

It’ll get you back into reading because: It’s so magical, but it’s also full of adventure, action, and a bit of romance. The characters are so refreshing and the world that Schwab has created pulls you in and doesn’t let you go.
A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab

One of the top books over the last few years, if you're new to fantasy or to dragons or romantsy, then Fourth Wing is a good starting point. There are more in the series, too, so you can keep doing if you liked it.

One of my favourite quirky fantasy reads in the last 5 years or so!

It'll get you back into reading because: It's fantasy but it's low fantasy. There's magic and castles and dragons and villains and frogs but it's quirky and it's funny and simply a delight.
Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

I'll read anything Stephanie Garber writes. Caraval was the first book I read of hers and it sucked me into this stuningly creative world and didn't let me go.

It'll get you back into reading because: of what I just said haha. But also there is mystery, romance, magic, and wonderful characters.

Other than The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit and Harry Potter, Eragon was really the bookthat got me into Fantasy.

It'll get you back into reading because: Dragons.

And if that doesn't do it: It's adventurous, it has a great world and great characters, it has a dragon.
Eragon by Christopher Paolini

Dystopian

I think Dystopian books in the early 2000s relaunched my love of reading. I've always been a big reader, but there was something about books like The Hunger Games and Divergent that really sucked me in. These are mostly from that time period, but are...

When you think ‘dystopian’, The Hunger Games are probably near the top your list. But this is easy to read, action-packed with excellent characters.

For a while I think I like Divergent more than the Hunger Games haha! I remember devouring this series while we were on holiday one year and absolutly loving it.

It'll get you back into reading becuase: It's fast paced, it's intriguing, there are challenges and trials, a love story throughout … it's great!
Divergent by Veronica Roth

I’m not 100% if this IS dystopian, but it’s definitely a ‘what would happen if … ‘ sort of story.

It’ll get you back into reading because: If you like the first one, there are 6 more books to enjoy. They’re pretty short, but they’re also action-packed.
Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden

It’ll get you back into reading because: It’s short and sweet, but also packs a punch. It’s probably a middle-grade book, as the characters in the story are quite young (unlike the movie, where they bump them up in age a little), but it really gets y...

Romance

While I'm not a huge romance reader, there have been some over the years that I have really enjoyed.

The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels is a hilarious romance-come-adventure novel set in the Victorian era.

It’ll get you back into reading because: It’s quirky as FLIP. The characters are fresh and whacky, and the whole idea behind the story is super unique.

Yes this is a Young Adult book, but it's romance, and it's heart breaking and it's beautiful.

I read this in the car on the way home from a road trip in Scotland and bawlled my eyes out. And I loved it.

Now, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy isn’t for everyone. But is incredibly quirky and a really fun read.

It’ll get you back into reading because: This book is crazy, yes, but it’s also somehow endearing and magical all in one. It’s a great start to Sci-Fi because nothing is taken seriously.

When I tell you Inkheart became my whole personality as a 10 year old for while, I'm not kidding.

It'll get you back into reading becuase: It's a brilliant story about stories. It's family, it's magic, it's fantasy, it's wonderful. And becuase it's a child's book, it's short. There's a whole series now, but the first is my fave.

Specifically the audio version! The audiobook of this story is fantasc, as it has multiple narrators. This is also a TV show, too, so you can watch that after you've read it!
