Dog-Friendly Hikes in Southern California That Are Actually Worth the Drive

Purple Star emoji 12 items
After three years of weekend hikes with Arie, I have very strong opinions about which trails are actually dog-friendly and which just technically allow dogs. These are the ones where I felt safe, where Arie came home truly tired (not just bored-tired...

OC Locals — Easy & Casual

For chill mornings, hot afternoons, or days when Arie just needs to sniff and stretch her legs.

Paved, mostly flat coastal walk with insane ocean views and a few patches of grass for break time. Perfect for hot days because there's a breeze the whole time. Arie does her best people-watching here. Park at the Salt Creek lot — meters are easy.
Salt Creek Beach Trail — Dana Point

The Lake View Trail is the easy entry; the East Ridge View loop if Arie has more energy than sense. Mostly open, so go before 10am in summer or you'll cook. The reservoir at the bottom is great for a sit-and-sniff break.
Peters Canyon Regional Park — Orange

The redwood grove is closed to dogs (annoying but true), but the rest of the park is fair game and there's actual shade — rare for OC. The dirt trail around the lake is our pick for slow walks. Free street parking if you don't want to pay the $3.
Carbon Canyon Regional Park — Brea

5.5 miles of paved trail along a creek with little garden sections and a sculpture garden tucked in. Stroller-friendly, doodle-friendly, basically grandma-friendly. We go when we want a walk but not an adventure.
Oso Creek Trail — Mission Viejo

An actual canyon hike inside Irvine — feels way more rural than it has any right to. Dirt trail, mild elevation, real shade in spots. Free permit needed for some access points, which I always forget about, then panic over. (No one has ever asked to s...
Bommer Canyon — Irvine

OC Locals — Real Workout

For when Arie has been a menace all morning and needs to be humbled.

This is our weekly long-walk spot. Wood Canyon Trail is 4.4 miles, relatively flat, well-shaded in stretches, and you almost always see other dogs which Arie deeply needs. Bring more water than you think.
Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park — Aliso Viejo

The name is dramatic and earned — the views from the top are stupid. The West Ridge Trail is the most direct way up. Steep enough that Arie sleeps for hours after. Go before sunrise on summer weekends or you'll spend more time looking for parking tha...
Top of the World — Laguna Coast Wilderness

Red Rock Canyon at the end is the payoff — sandstone formations that look like they belong in Utah. Dogs allowed throughout. A bit exposed, so cooler months are way better. Pack out everything.
Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park — Foothill Ranch

Big network of trails on the inland side of PCH (dogs are NOT allowed on the beach side or below the bluffs — important). Moro Ridge is our usual loop. Pay-to-park, bring cash or use the app.
Crystal Cove State Park — El Moro Canyon (Newport Coast)

Equestrian-shared trails so leash up always and step aside when you hear hooves. The Pony Trail loop is a nice 2-mile starter. We come here when Aliso is too crowded.
Santiago Oaks Regional Park — Orange

Worth the Drive — LA County

I save these for when I want a real day out. All within 60–90 minutes of OC.

Yes, it's a scene. Yes, it's worth it. Off-leash zones in two sections, which is the actual reason to drive there. Arie pretends she's a celebrity dog. Free parking is impossible — give up and use a lot.
Runyon Canyon Park — Los Angeles

My personal favorite on this list. A 3-mile loop with a waterfall, ruins of an old stone house, and shade the whole way. Dogs on leash, well-marked, and the parking lot has a vault toilet. Worth the PCH drive. Go midweek if you can.
Solstice Canyon — Malibu
