Star-Struck emoji 12 items
There are a hundred articles online listing 'dog-friendly beaches in SoCal' that include places where dogs technically have to stay leashed near the parking lot. This isn't that. These are the beaches where my dog has actually run free, the timing ru...

Truly Off-Leash, Any Day

No time restrictions, no seasonal asterisks. If you want your dog to run free for hours and meet 30 of his closest new friends, this is the list. Plan parking accordingly.

The gold standard. A mile and a half of true off-leash beach with zero time restrictions, real parking, public restrooms, and dog drinking fountains. Arie has logged more hours here than any other beach. Get there by 9am on weekends or you are parkin...
Huntington Dog Beach

The only legal off-leash beach in LA County, which is wild when you think about it. Smaller than Huntington but well-loved. Off-leash daily from 6am to 8pm. Keep him leashed walking in from the parking area, then it is all good.

The original. Off-leash 24/7 at the north end of Ocean Beach since 1972. Worth the drive to San Diego just for this. Arie made three best friends in twenty minutes the one time we drove down for a Saturday morning. Energy is friendly chaos.

North end of the famous Coronado white-sand crescent, year-round off-leash. The vibe is quieter than OB. Bring sunscreen because there is genuinely no shade. The Hotel del Coronado is right there if you want to make a weekend of it.

Mission Bay technicality but worth knowing. Most of the island is off-leash, calm bay water, and the sandy dunes are basically a dog dream park. Better for dogs who like to swim than ocean dogs because the bay water is flat.
Fiesta Island

Off-Leash With a Catch

The seasonal windows and the hours-based rules that most articles skip over. Read the asterisks. Del Mar in October hits different than Del Mar in July.

North Beach (locally called Dog Beach) is off-leash September 1 through June 14, then on-leash for the busy summer months. That off-season window is the gift. October mornings here, no crowds, the bluffs lit up gold. We make the drive at least twice ...
Del Mar Dog Beach

North end of Cardiff has an off-leash zone year-round. Smaller and rockier than the big SD beaches but the energy is mellow and the surf instructors who live nearby usually bring their dogs too. Combine with a Beachside coffee for a perfect Encinitas...

Laguna allows dogs on the city beaches before 9am and after 6pm year-round, leashed. Main Beach at golden hour with Arie watching the volleyball games is one of our favorite OC sunsets. Pop into the boardwalk patios afterwards.

Worth the Drive Even On-Leash

Technically leashed beaches that are still worth the gas. The scenery, the trails, the campground vibes - all the reasons we still pack Arie in the car for these even though he cannot do his full zoomies routine.

On-leash only on the sand, but the bluff trails above the cove are dog-friendly and stunning. We come for the tide pools at low tide. Bring a long line so Arie can sniff and you can still control him around the cliffs.

Technically on-leash on the beach itself, but the dog-friendly campground sets the tone and rangers are mellow about well-behaved leashed dogs on the trails. Northwest Malibu, less crowded than Zuma. The sea caves at the north end are surreal at low ...

Leashed only, but the beach itself is huge and sandy. Doheny is our easy-button when we want beach time without driving an hour from OC. Free parking on the street side, paid lot inside. He loves the wide-open sand and there's a little inlet near the...

Right next to Huntington Dog Beach but way less crowded because dogs have to stay leashed. Worth it if you want a long beach walk without dodging a hundred off-leash dogs. The wetlands on the east side are pretty too. Plenty of parking, never had to ...
