The OC Restaurant Patios Where Dogs Are Actually Welcome (Not Just Tolerated)

Face Savoring Food emoji 19 items
There's a difference between a restaurant that allows dogs and a restaurant that actually welcomes them. Water bowls, friendly staff, enough patio space that Arie isn't squeezed behind a planter. After three years of weekend brunches and impromptu lu...

Newport Beach & Balboa Island

The classic Newport scene. Arie has been to every one of these patios and they all pass the test: water bowls without asking, treats sometimes, and zero side-eye when he settles in.

Our go-to for a casual lunch when we want to sit outside and not stress about Arie. The Newport patio gets full sun and they never blink at a dog. Fresh fish tacos, the ahi poke bowl, cold drinks. Arie usually gets attention from every table around u...
Bear Flag Fish Co.

Solid old-school Mexican on PCH and the CDM patio is shaded and roomy. The chips and salsa hit hard, the margaritas are strong, and nobody bats an eye when Arie naps next to my chair. Easy weeknight win.
Avila's El Ranchito (Corona del Mar)

If you've never had brunch on Balboa Island with your dog, this is the spot to start. Wilma's has been family-run forever, the patio is right on Marine Ave, and the staff treat Arie like a regular. Order the breakfast burrito.

They have a literal dog menu, which is the kind of detail that tells you everything. The pancakes are the move for me, the chicken-and-rice plate is the move for Arie. Fashion Island patio is wide open and shaded.
Great Maple (Newport Beach)

Easily one of the prettiest patios in OC. It sits right on the Back Bay so you get water views, cool breezes, and zero pretense about dogs. We come here for slow Saturday brunches when I want Arie to feel like a tiny celebrity.
Lighthouse Bayview Café (Newport Beach)

Costa Mesa

The strip mall surprises. Costa Mesa keeps adding patios that quietly welcome dogs without making it a thing. These are the spots I actually rebook.

Tucked inside The CAMP, which is the most pet-friendly courtyard in OC. The patio is leafy and chill, the food is genuinely good (the brunch is my favorite), and Arie can stretch out without being in anyone's way. Bring cash for the meter.
Old Vine Cafe (The CAMP, Costa Mesa)

Fried chicken, biscuits, and one of the most laid-back patios in Costa Mesa. Tons of picnic tables, plenty of space for Arie to sprawl, and they always come out with a water bowl before I even ask. The Firebird sandwich is unreal.
The Crack Shack (Costa Mesa)

This one feels fancy without being uptight. The hotel patio overlooks the lake, they have a real dog menu, and the staff have been doing this long enough that they actually know how to take care of you both. Date-night energy with your dog.
Silver Trumpet (Avenue of the Arts, Costa Mesa)

Huntington Beach

For when we want sand-to-table. These HB patios all have water bowls without me asking and the staff have learned Arie by name.

Right across from the pier inside the Shorebreak, which is the most dog-friendly hotel in HB. The patio is colorful and breezy, the staff bring out water bowls within seconds, and the fish tacos are dangerous. We come here after long beach walks.
Pacific Hideaway (Kimpton Shorebreak, Huntington Beach)

The HB location has a giant covered patio and a dog menu (turkey patty, beef patty, bacon strips — yes really). Burger is excellent, beers are cold, and Arie has never been so excited to see a server. Easy weekend lunch.
Slater's 50/50 (Huntington Beach)

The patio at Paséa is huge, has straight-up ocean views, and somehow stays breezy even when the rest of HB is melting. We come here for sunset cocktails after a long Sunday at the beach. Arie naps. I unwind. Everyone wins.
Lorea at Paséa Hotel (Huntington Beach)

Laguna Beach

Worth the drive south for sunsets and shade. The Laguna scene is fancier on paper but every patio on this list has been chill with a big dog.

180-degree ocean views from a multi-level patio. Honestly the kind of view that makes you forget your phone. Their breakfast is the move (huevos rancheros, French toast). Staff are unbothered by dogs, which on a busy Laguna Sunday is the highest comp...
The Cliff Restaurant (Laguna Beach)

The open-air patio sits literally above Main Beach. If Laguna has a postcard, this is the patio in it. Margaritas, fresh ceviche, and Arie watching the surfers go in and out. Worth driving down for, even just for an appetizer.
Las Brisas (Laguna Beach)

Dana Point

The harbor crowd. Quieter than Newport, prettier patios, and Arie can usually score a few sneaky goldfish crackers from the next table.

Hidden gem overlooking Dana Point Harbor. Their covered patio is perfect for a long brunch with a sleepy dog and unmatched view of the boats. The avocado toast and breakfast burrito both rip. Easy weekend escape from the OC freeway grind.
Proud Mary's (Dana Point Harbor)

Harbor-side patio that wraps around to the water on three sides. Arie sprawls under our table while we work through the Hawaiian happy hour. The breeze plus the boats coming in and out is honestly meditative.
Wind & Sea Restaurant

Sit right on the harbor with a coffee, an acai bowl, and your dog. Umbrellas everywhere so even the noon sun is tolerable. We come for a slow Sunday morning at least once a month.
Coffee Importers

Orange

When I want a date night without driving to the coast. Plaza-adjacent patios that are surprisingly dog-friendly in a not-trying-too-hard way.

Cat & Arie | @ariepup profile picture
If you've never wandered Old Towne Orange with a coffee and a dog, fix that. The Filling Station sits inside a vintage gas station, the patio is shaded and full of regulars, and the staff bring out treats for Arie unprompted. My favorite pre-antique-...

Haven Craft Kitchen + Bar

Chicken and waffles, but make it walkable from the Orange Plaza circle. The patio is small but they always make room for a leashed dog. Easy lunch stop after a Sunday wander through the antique shops.
