The harsh iPhone alarm at 6 AM was ruining both our moods before the day even started. Switching to a gradual light wake-up made mornings feel less like an ambush and more like actually waking up naturally.

My partner wakes up if a squirrel sneezes outside. Adding white noise meant I could actually move around the bedroom in the morning without triggering a fight about creaky floorboards.

We realized the sunrise alarm means nothing if actual sunlight is already flooding the room at 5 AM in summer. Blacking out the windows gave us full control over when our bodies think morning starts.

After the sunrise alarm wakes us, harsh overhead lights used to undo all that gentle progress. Setting smart bulbs to slowly warm up through the morning routine kept the calm feeling going past the bedroom.

Realized that waking up sweaty at 3 AM and then being groggy for the alarm was half our problem. Swapping to temperature-regulating bedding meant we both actually slept through until the sunrise light kicked in.

Sometimes one of us reads on a tablet while the other sleeps, and even with blackout curtains that screen glow is enough to cause problems. A solid sleep mask ended that tension completely.

We discovered that slamming coffee the second we woke up was spiking cortisol and making us both irritable by 9 AM. Switching the first drink to something gentler extended that calm sunrise feeling.

Started using specific scents for bedtime and morning so our brains built associations — lavender means sleep, citrus means wake up. Sounds woo-woo but after two weeks it became automatic.

Scrolling Twitter until midnight and then wondering why the sunrise alarm wasn't enough to wake us gently — yeah, we had to fix the input side too. These helped us actually put screens away.

The last piece was giving our brains something to do besides ruminate about tomorrow's meetings. Writing for five minutes and doing a short stretch routine turned bedtime from stressful to something we actually look forward to.
