Jet lag hit hard and I was basically a zombie shuffling through cobblestone streets. These places handed me espresso so strong it rewired my brain and cost less than my sad airport latte back home.

My phone died forty minutes after landing because I forgot my adapter. Standing in a random piazza with a dead phone taught me to always have backup plans that don't need Wi-Fi.

Roman breakfast is basically dessert and I'm not complaining. Half these places I found by accident while being completely turned around, which honestly made them taste even better.

Nobody warns you that Roman cobblestones will destroy your feet in approximately 45 minutes. I wore cute sneakers day one and had blisters by lunch. Never again.

Getting lost meant I accidentally stumbled onto things I hadn't planned to see. Some of my favorite moments happened because I took a wrong turn and looked up.

My carrier charged me eleven dollars for one text message. Eleven. Dollars. After that wake-up call I figured out how to stay connected without selling a kidney to Verizon.

I showed up in athletic shorts and a college t-shirt and felt like I had a neon sign on my forehead. Romans dress casually but intentionally, and blending in made the whole experience better.

Being lost burns calories apparently because I was starving by 10 AM. These spots are scattered around the center and none of them required a reservation or more than five minutes of waiting.

Half my suitcase was useless stuff I never touched. These are the random items I almost left behind that ended up saving me multiple times during that first disorienting morning.
