Nobody warned me the Rose Valley gets swampy-hot by 10am. I was dripping through my first SPF application within an hour and spent the rest of the day looking like a lobster in a flower crown.

Showed up in white sneakers like a tourist cliché. Within twenty minutes they were stained pink-brown and soaking wet from morning dew on the rosa damascena bushes.

Bought way too many cheap rose water bottles from roadside stands that smelled like perfumed dish soap. These are the ones that actually smell like real Bulgarian roses back home.

Rented a car thinking I'd figure out Bulgarian road signs. Ended up in the wrong village twice and missed the opening ceremony because Google Maps kept routing me through unpaved farm roads.

Booked a big hotel chain twenty minutes outside town and spent half my festival budget on taxis. Should have stayed walking distance from the main square where everything happens.

Skipped breakfast thinking I'd grab something at the festival. Ended up hangry during a two-hour parade with nothing but rose-flavored candy available, which gets old fast.

Nearly blew off the folk performances thinking they'd be cheesy tourist stuff. Turned out to be the most memorable part of the whole trip and I'm still mad I almost missed them.

Shot everything on my phone the first morning and every photo looked flat and washed out. The pink petals against green hills deserve better than that.

Walked into a restaurant confidently pointing at menu items and accidentally ordered tripe soup three times. A little preparation goes a long way in smaller Bulgarian towns.

My suitcase smelled like a perfume factory by day three. Branched out to non-rose souvenirs and found stuff that was actually more interesting and less likely to leak everywhere.

Came home with a sunburn, sore feet, rose-stained everything, and a phone full of blurry dance photos. These helped me feel human again on the flight back.
