Tasmanian Hiking Essentials 🌲

Purple Star emoji 22 items
I recently hiked the Overland Track in Tasmania - my first big multi-day hike in over 10 years! I had to buy most of my gear new, but luckily one of my friends is totally gear-obsessed and helped me find the best of the best for the trail. This list ...

Pack

Hands down the best pack I've ever seen or used. Made specifically for women so it is super comfy. The lid of the pack magically turns into a daypack and the rain cover is in-built. There are so many amazing features to this pack that I'm still disco...

Sleep System

I would argue this is the most important part of the packing list! Good sleep = a happy hiker! This sleep system is all about warmth, comfort and convenience.

I have the 15 degrees fahrenheit, regular version and it's perfect for Tassie's cold nights! I used it in the snow on the Overland Track and it kept me snug.
NEMO Sleeping Bag

I have the ‘Regular Mummy’ size in this mat and oh my gosh! It is so light! Only 480 grams and takes up no room in my pack.

My friend and I shared the 3-person version of this tent whilst hiking the Overland Track. She carried the main tent and I carried the fly and poles. The whole tent weighs just 2kgs!

Clothing

When hiking in Tassie, you need to be prepared for all weather events. We experienced sunshine, snow and torrential rain during our six-day hike of the Overland Track in late October! These are the key components to my hiking fit.

This waterproof jacket has been my saving grace whilst hiking in Tassie! Even when it rained non-stop all day (40mm), it kept me super dry! I got the mid-length one so it didn't ride up with my pack and I could sit on it when the ground was wet.

The comfiest and cutest, sustainable, hiking pants. Just make sure you leave the side zips down so they don't rub on your hips from the pack strap!

I grab this fleece jumper more than anything else in my wardrobe. It is ridiculously cosy and warm. The front pocket is perfect for putting your phone, keys, or cold hands in (or trail mix if you're like me)!

No joke, I wore this every single day, for six days, to hike over 70kms and it didn't smell even a tiny bit!

My favourite feature of these is the zip on the side so you can take them on and off without taking off your shoes. Even if it's not raining, I'd recommend these as it will allow you to sit on the wet ground/surfaces.

I didn't actually get this T but this is the one I wanted! Unfortunately my order didn't come in time for the hike but all of Zorali's hiking clothes are gorg!

I actually bought these shoes second-hand on Facebook Marketplace a week before the hike (wouldn't recommend) but they fit me perfect and kept my feet dry the whole week on trail! Zero blisters.
Salomon Hiking Boots

I NEVER thought I'd spend $100 on socks but here we are. I can actually confirm that they were worth the investment. After walking through rivers and mud puddles for days, my toes stayed dry and warm the whole time!

I'd never used poles on a hike before but they were sooo worth it! Especially to help support your knees on those downhills with a heavy pack on your back.

Cooking

Food is life. Bring more than enough and don't skimp out on the lollies and chocolate.

Okay but these were actually DELICIOUS! And SO easy! You just add 300mls of boiling water and wait 5-10 mins for them to dehydrate. My favourite was the Cauliflower and Pea Dahl.

Such a clever storage solution being collapsible! The bowl is big enough to eat multiple packs of porridge out of.

This made drinking water on trail sooo easy! Just fill it up from any stream and squeeze it out straight into your water bottle. It filters and makes the water safe to drink.

At home I take my Yeti everywhere but they are heavy so I bought a Nalgene for the Overland Track hike. Light and sturdy!

We took one 230g cannister between the two of us for 6 days on trail and it was more than enough! Just don't forget to take it out of your pack before flying back to the mainland.

I have the Jetboil Zip 800ml cooking system and it was perfect size for both my friend and I. Most dehydrated meals require 300mls of boiling water each so this was idea. I recommend only boiling water in it if possible to keep it nice and clean.

Kind of boring but essential for safety. I wouldn't go on a hike without one of these bad boys now after seeing how many people get lost in the Tasmanian wildnerness! I have the one pictured.
