I met (surpassed 💅) my goal of reading 80 books this year! Here are my favorite reads of the year. Shop at Bookshop and Libro.fm to support local bookstores!
The writing and character development in this book is outstanding. The story follows a group of outsiders who form a sort of cult and a woman escaping the burnout of corporate culture who runs into the group.
The Colony
I am IN LOVE with this book. This takes place in Tudor England and follows the story of a young farm boy who discovers he’s an Earl. It’s SO good. I read the audiobook and it was expertly narrated.
The Pretender: A Novel
One of my absolute favorites of the year. I think of this book constantly. The story explores the legend of cursed wax fugues that come to life and murder men. The perfect gothic feminist rage book. It’s classified as body horror but I don’t remember...
Slashed Beauties
Another absolute top read. I will forever ready anything Lucy Rose writes. Folk horror with a dark fairy tale vibe. The most gorgeous writing. Includes cannibalism so beware, but the writing is so beautiful and well-done that the metaphorical aspect ...
The Lamb: A Novel
I already loved Alix E. Harrow and then she gives me a LADY KNIGHT!?!? This book is amazing. Beautiful prose as always and amazing, captivating story.
The Everlasting
I try to be a hipster and read niche books but that’s silly of me because this book is amazing and worth every bit of hype and praise. A story of a love triangle with some thriller (not scary) elements. Such a beautiful, unforgettable story.
Broken Country (Reese's Book Club)
I am a forever stan of TJ Klune. I especially loved this book because it had a thriller element, which is my vibe. A beautiful story with amazing world-building.
The Bones Beneath My Skin
Another book worth every bit of hype. I LOVED this novel. It’s like Lord of the Flies meets Love Island. Such a brilliant concept and immersive plot.
The Compound: A GMA Book Club Pick: A Novel
I randomly picked this up and omg what an amazing thriller. I was hooked from the very start. If you’re into twisty mystery thrillers, give this a try.
What Happened to Nina?: A Novel
I will never stop recommending this book. I am floored that this is a debut novel because the writing is immaculate! This is a queer coming-of-age novel that follows the story of a young Columbian immigrant navigating his sexuality and life in the US...
Hombrecito: A Novel
I very, very randomly picked this up because I thought it was funny to have my 4 year old say the title. This book is amazing and unlike anything I’ve ever read. A coming-of-age novel about a woman in the mid-1940s.
Don't Look at Me Like That
I feel weird recommending this book because it’s a tough read (PLEASE check trigger warnings), but it’s amazingly written. I love Oates’ writing and this book was fantastic.
Fox: A Novel
A total fever dream of a book, I loved this more than the first book. I think you can read as a standalone and be fine. If you’re into weird girl dark academia, give this a go!
We Love You, Bunny: A Novel
I really loved this book and don’t see it getting the hype it deserves. This gothic, atmospheric novel does a great job exploring female friendship and desire. The writing is so beautiful.
Mayra: A Novel
Another gorgeously written book by Isabel Cañas. I love getting getting to experience historical fiction and Mexican folklore through her beautiful storytelling.
