The jewel of San Diego, and my favorite spot in the city. Watch sea lions lounge on the rocks, snorkel the clear coves, and catch a sunset that stops you in your tracks. Come early for parking, and just plan to stay a while.
La Jolla Cove
One of the country's great urban parks, with gardens, Spanish architecture, and 17 museums to wander. Even just walking the grounds is free and gorgeous. Give it half a day at least, there's so much tucked inside.
Balboa Park
World famous for a reason. It's massive, beautifully done, and genuinely worth the hype whether you've got kids or not. Wear comfy shoes, it's a lot of walking, and go early before it heats up.
San Diego Zoo
The postcard beach with the iconic red roofed hotel behind it. Soft sand, calm vibes, and skyline views back toward the city. Take the ferry over for five bucks and make an afternoon of it.
Hotel del Coronado
The best free sunset in San Diego. Dramatic cliffs right over the Pacific, golden light, and that big exhale kind of view. Bring a jacket for the breeze and get there before the sun starts dropping.
