Is your 7-10 year old taking off in their reading? MINE TOO. They adore graphic novels especially. Here are some absolute winners in my house. 🥰
Â
Feels like a more modern Calvin and Hobbes. Phoebe is a cute, smart, and quirky kid. Marigold is her snarky unicorn. They become best friends and navigate the world around them.
Phoebe and Her Unicorn Series
Â
Goofy concept. Outrageous characters. Serious cat in space. Meow.
The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza
Â
My kiddo has big tough feelings, and books exploring how other kids navigate big tough feelings is a good sell. Especially when there’s a spirit cat that helps things along!
Bounce Back
Â
The first in a fun series combining kid entrepreneurship and hero attributes!
Katie the Catsitter: (A Graphic Novel)
Â
A story of friendship and what to do when a world of magic makes you different. Because of the strange nature of the story, I’ve found re-readability is high!
Manu: A Graphic Novel
Â
An absolutely bananas story of an influencer cat who’s framed for a crime. This is perhaps the lesser known series by Aaron Blabey, but it’s quite a fun ride!
Cat on the Run in Cat of Death! (Cat on the Run #1)
Â
Actually starts to blur the line between graphic novel and chapter book. Kids can identify with the creative internal
hero building of the quirky main character.
The Amazing Crafty Cat (Crafty Cat, 1)
Â
I’m honestly VERY impressed with this adaptation. As a kid, I loved the strong girl characters with entrepreneurial spirits - the graphic novelization gives it an extra big entryway for new readers.
The Baby-sitters Club #1-7 Graphic Novel Box Set
Â
Once again, a fun adaptation of a book series. The illustrations only compliment the kind of imaginative scenes the books come up with. Makes my kiddo come back for more.
Magic Tree House Graphic Novel Starter Set
Â
While this technically belongs in the Bounce Back series, the focus on slightly different characters in the world (plus a new spirit animal guardian) makes it a perfect standalone book as well.
Bounce Back 2: No Such Thing as Perfect
Â
A lesser known series by Tom Watson. (Diary of a Wimpy Kid.) Still a great sense of humor and fun artistic style. We search for more books in this series first thing in our library.
Stick Cat: A Tail of Two Kitties (Stick Cat, 1)
Â
If you’re searching for a transition to chapter books, this is a great option. Plenty of illustrations and colorful text. (The color of the text changes each book and matches the spine! AWESOME production there.) Each book is adventurous and bingeabl...
Snow Place Like Home (Diary of an Ice Princess #1)
Â
My kid really identifies with characters who use friendship and somewhat magical elements to overcome personal struggles. This book has some great re-reading legs as well.
Lo and Behold
Â
Since my kid is on the younger side of ferocious reader, they sometimes gravitate towards the graphic novels that feature kids closer to their age. They love the tie-in to the main BSC universe, but the stories are skewed just a few years younger.
Baby-sitters Little Sister Graphic Novels #1-4
Â
This would have been considered more comic book than graphic novel in its heyday, but it’s hard to ignore the classics! All the Calvin and Hobbes collections are also at the top of my kiddo’s list when choosing what to read.
