Home Renovation on a Budget: The DIY Products I Actually Used or Plan To Use (No Contractor)

Purple Star emoji 22 items
I renovated on a budget without hiring anyone and I'm very much not a contractor. This is everything I actually reached for to paint, patch, re-floor, and fake-fancy my place: the cheap-but-good stuff that punched way above its price, the couple thing...

Floors & Backsplash

Where peel-and-stick earns its keep.. the single biggest "wait, did you actually renovate?" budget move. Prep is 90% of it: clean the surface, take your time on the first row, and forgive yourself for the one you have to pull up and redo.

The peel-and-stick stuff got me far, but the day I did real tile I rented a saw and immediately wished I'd just owned one. This budget one made clean cuts around outlets and corners without the chipping I got scoring by hand — if your project has act...

I'm always looking for a knife. Spend the extra dollar on the metal ruler; my plastic one flexed and I had a couple crooked cuts to show for it before I switched. So annoying.

Budget. Hero. No saw, no pro install.. I laid it myself over an okay subfloor (with weird 50s linoleum) and it completely changed the room. Take your time on the first row; that's the part I rushed and had to pull up and redo.

Listen, I'm not to proud to say this SAVED me. I skipped these on day one and could barely walk that night. Bought a pair the next morning and it was the best twelve dollars of the whole project — my knees actually forgave me.

Vibes. I love this color, and the thickness of the vinyl tile sheet will make you think twice of what its made of. Super easy to clean and you honestly can't tell that it isnt real! seriously..

Tools

You do not need a $1,200 workshop. It would be sooo nice, but these are the few I actually need (borrow from my dad) on every project — buy these, rent or borrow the rest.

I hung a gallery wall with just a tape measure and a regular level first. If you can imagine, it took forever and still came out a little off. This throws a dead-level line clear across the wall, so my shelves, tile rows, and frames all actually line...

Boring, cheap, and I'd have been lost without them. The level especially — once you hang one shelf slightly off you can never un-see it, and this is what kept me honest.

If you buy one thing off this whole list, make it this. Don't skimp on a drill/driver.

I started sanding by hand and nearly gave up on the whole project. Then I got this and prep actually became semi-bearable. Beginner-friendly, and it's survived everything I've thrown at it since.

Paint & Walls

Nothing changes a room faster or cheaper than paint. Spend your money on good paint, primer and tape, go cheap on everything else, and let the budget stuff look expensive.

I brushed and rolled a whole room and thought to myself, ‘Courtney, this is too much’. So best believe I researched this one and apparently its worth every dollar the moment you're past one small project. Will update when I get into it!

I tried to save a few bucks on cheap tape once and spent the whole next day razoring dried paint off my trim — never again. So, forgive me if I have Old Faithful on here.

I overthought rollers for way too long and finally just grabbed a basic microfiber kit — it did 95% of the job for a fraction of the price. I bought a second sleeve too, because a dirty roller drying on my counter is exactly the friction that leaves ...

New cabinets arent in my budget, so I'm eyeing this. I've used it on other furniture before, so I'm excited to see how it will look on all of the cabinets. Think pink!

I almost skipped primer one time and I'm so glad I didn't. One coat of this and my cheap paint definitely looked expensive. Putting it here for the cabinets!

Genuinely my favorite dumb-simple thing I bought. It goes on pink and dries white, so my ADHD brain never had to guess whether it was ready to sand. Patched a whole wall of old anchor holes in an afternoon. WITHOUT FORGETTING!!

Prep & Safety

The stuff nobody posts about that quietly decides whether the whole project is miserable or fine. Skip these and you'll feel it. Ask my knees, lungs, and the plastic drop cloth I had to re-buy.

Cleaning up between steps is what kept me going instead of quitting in a pile of dust. My wet/dry vac earned its place fast, my neighbors hear this at ALL TIMES.

I covered my nose with my shirt at first and felt awful after a day of sanding. Switching to a real respirator the second I was spraying or sanding made a genuine difference. This is the non-negotiable pick for me.

I have kids, so this lives in my house anyway — but for reno it's the degreaser step everyone skips right before painting, then wonders why it peeled.

I bought plastic first. I slipped, it tore, and I had to re-buy/cry, so learn from my mistake and get canvas. REUSEABLE HELLOO

Fixtures & Hardware

The cheap swaps that read as a brand-new room. Knobs, pulls, spray paint, a clean caulk line make everything cohesive.

Courtney Clark profile picture
A clean caulk line was the single thing that made my work look 'done' instead of 'DIY.' I cheaped out on the gun first and it dripped everywhere. The dripless one genuinely saved my sanity (and my sink).

Instead of buying new fixtures I sprayed old outdoor ones with this and they look brand new. Two light coats only. I gummed up my first piece going too fast, so please learn from me on that one.

Swapping my dated hardware for a matching bulk set was the cheapest change I made and somehow the one giving me the biggest dopamine hit. Buying in bulk meant everything matched and I skipped the per-knob markup entirely.
