Ok, what do we actually wear?
What to wear and put on your feet for your first family hike
I’d bring this one for a first hike, it’s light, easy to pack, and gives you some protection from sun and a little rain without feeling bulk

comfortable for both easy trails and everyday walking, plus the waterproofing is a nice bonus when the trail gets wet.
GEL-VENTURE 11 WATERPROOF
you can wear them as pants or zip them into shorts when it gets warm
KUHL Renegade Convertible Pants - Men's | REI Co-op
keeps a bit of rain and sun off, and the little whistle is actually handy
Nike Swift Women's Repel UV-Protection Running Jacket
comfortable enough for everyday wear, but water- and stain-resistant enough that a little mud or drizzle isn’t a big deal
Columbia South Saddle Peak Pants - Women's | REI Co-op
the one-pull lacing is super convenient, and the grip gives you a bit more confidence when the trail gets uneven or slippery
Salomon X Ultra 360 Edge Hiking Shoes - Women's | REI Co-op
Okay, these are actually cute enough for everyday wear too, so the kids can use them for the trail, then keep wearing them for school, walks, or weekend adventures
adidas Terrex Tracefinder Junior Trail Running Shoes - AW26
insect protection, sun protection, and moisture-wicking all in one, so there’s a little less to worry about on the trail

stretchy, quick-drying, sun-protective, and comfy enough that they can actually run, climb, and play without complaining.
REI Co-op Active Pursuits Tech Pants - Kids' | REI Co-op
UPF 50+, neck coverage, and good ventilation without being a bulky hat
Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Hat - Kids' | REI Co-op
Little things that save the hike
Not the exciting stuff, but you’ll be glad you brought them when you need them.
they’re adjustable for both adults and kids 7+, lightweight to carry, and give everyone a bit more support on the trail
TrailBuddy Lightweight 7075 Aluminum Trekking Poles
blisters can turn a fun family hike into a very unhappy walk home, I’d definitely keep some of this in the hiking kit
KT Health Blister Prevention Tape
because sharing the trail with mosquitoes is definitely not part of the family adventure plan
Sawyer SP5442 Picaridin Insect Repellent 4oz (2 Pack)
For those classic “Mom, I NEED to pee/poop NOW!” moments.
they’re leak-proof, seal up properly, and help contain the smell until you can dispose of them
