Every one of these sat on my wishlist for months because the covers gave absolutely nothing. Then I cracked one open during a flight delay and didn't look up until boarding.

Short stories already get ignored — slap an ugly cover on them and nobody stands a chance of finding these. Every one of these collections made me stop mid-paragraph and reread sentences just to feel them again.

Poetry covers are either wildly pretentious or painfully boring — there's no in-between. These all fall into the boring camp visually, but the words inside kept me up past midnight highlighting lines on my phone.

Translations already face an uphill battle in English-speaking markets. Then publishers slap on the most generic covers imaginable. These books survived all of that and still became some of my all-time favorites.

These are the ones where you can tell the marketing team had fifteen minutes and a stock photo budget. The disconnect between cover and content is almost funny — until the writing makes you forget what the outside even looked like.
