I Finally Found the Best Way to Watch Bison at Elk Island

Purple Star emoji 36 items
Planning a trip to Elk Island National Park but worried you'll drive around for hours and never actually see bison? I burned a full tank of gas my first visit and spotted exactly zero. After a dozen trips, I figured out the gear, the timing, the spot...

Optics That Actually Work for Bison Spotting

My first trip I brought cheap binoculars and couldn't tell a bison from a hay bale at 200 yards. These are the optics that changed everything for me in the park.

Grab these before your first visit. I went from squinting at brown blobs to counting calves in a herd from the parking lot. Perfect for anyone who doesn't want to spend $800 on Swarovskis.

Use these if you wear glasses. The eye relief is generous enough that you won't smash your frames into the eyecups every time a bison moves. Lighter than they look, too.

Picked these up for my partner who kept stealing mine. The color clarity at dawn is wild. We spotted a bull rubbing against a tree at 300 meters like it was right in front of us.

Bring this if you want to sit at the Bison Loop pullout and watch from the car. Compact enough for a daypack but powerful enough to see facial expressions on a bull. Not kidding.

Swap out your kit lens before you go. My first trip with a 55mm was depressing. This lens got me close-up shots from a safe distance that my family thought were taken at a zoo.

Toss this on your jacket so your binoculars aren't swinging around your neck like a pendulum every time you hop out of the car. Saved me from a bruised sternum on windy days.

Clothing for Alberta Weather That Changes Every Hour

One morning it was 22 degrees Celsius. By afternoon, sideways rain and 8 degrees. I learned the hard way that Elk Island weather has a personal vendetta against unprepared visitors.

Layer this under a shell and you're good down to near freezing. I wore it on a foggy October morning when bison were grazing 50 feet from the road and stayed warm for three hours without moving.

Keep this stuffed in your pack because Alberta will rain on you without warning. Weighs almost nothing. I got caught in a downpour at Astotin Lake and was dry in 30 seconds flat.

Wear these if you plan to walk any of the trails. My feet used to be wrecked after the Shoreline Trail. These kept me blister-free even in August heat. Lifetime warranty, too.

Pull this over your ears at dawn when the wind cuts through the meadows. Also works as a face cover when the mosquitoes near the lake decide you're breakfast. Packs down to nothing.

Zip the legs off when it warms up, zip them back on when you're standing in tall grass wondering about ticks. Practical and not terrible looking, which is rare for convertible pants.

Wear this for sun protection on the open grassland sections. There is zero shade near the bison paddocks. I got a sunburn through my hair before I started wearing this. Floats if it blows into the lake, apparently.

Where to Actually Find the Bison in the Park

Nobody told me Elk Island has two separate herds in two different areas. I spent my first visit in the wrong half of the park wondering why I only saw deer.

Drive this loop slowly, windows down, right after sunrise. Plains bison graze along the road edges most mornings. I've counted over 40 in a single pass. Go on a weekday if you can.

Stop at the first pullout after you enter from the north. Wood bison hang out in the northern section and they're bigger than the plains bison. Saw my first bull here and genuinely gasped.

Park near the lake and walk the boardwalk at dusk. Bison wander through this area more than the maps suggest. Ran into a cow and calf 20 meters from the picnic shelter last September.

Hike this 8km loop if you want solitude and a decent chance of seeing bison away from the road. Fewer people, more wildlife. Bring bear spray just in case, even though bears are rare here.

Try this shorter loop in the south section. It cuts through aspen forest into open meadow where bison like to rest midday. Saw fresh wallows and tracks even on days I missed the herds.

Walk this one in early morning fog if you want an almost eerie experience. Bison materialize out of the mist like something from a nature documentary. Bring your camera and keep your distance.

Field Guides and Apps for Identifying What You See

Bison weren't the only things I spotted. Elk, coyotes, beavers, and about 250 bird species live in this park. Having the right references turned a good trip into a ridiculously fun one.

Download this before you hit the park. Point your phone at any bird call and it identifies the species in real time. I found out the weird honking near Astotin Lake was a flock of American white pelicans.

Use this to log everything you spot. Other visitors' observations show you exactly where bison, elk, and coyotes were seen recently. Basically crowdsourced scouting. Saved me hours of aimless driving.

Keep this in the glove box. When my kid asked if that was a muskrat or a beaver, I actually had an answer for once. Covers every mammal you'd realistically see at Elk Island.

Pair this with Merlin for a complete setup. The illustrations are detailed enough to tell a downy woodpecker from a hairy woodpecker, which apparently matters and I now care about deeply.

Grab one at the gate or download the PDF. The trail intersections aren't always obvious and cell service is spotty inside the park. Got turned around once near Flyingshot Lake without it.

Point your phone at any plant or mushroom and get an instant ID. My partner identified wild roses and saskatoon berries along the trail. Turns the walk between bison sightings into its own activity.

Snacks and Drinks That Survive a Full Day in the Car

There's no restaurant inside Elk Island. I learned this at 2pm on my first visit with a growling stomach and nothing but a gas station 30 minutes away. Pack smart or suffer.

Fill this with coffee before dawn and it's still hot at lunch. Bison watching involves a lot of sitting in your car at pullouts waiting. Hot coffee makes the waiting feel intentional instead of boring.

Toss a few in every pocket. They don't melt, they don't crumble, and they actually taste good at 6am when you're parked on the Bison Loop hoping for movement. The chocolate peanut butter one is dangerously good.

Bring two. The park has no water fountains on most trails and summer days get surprisingly hot on the open grassland. I got dehydrated once and had to cut a hike short. Annoying and preventable.

Snag a box for the car. They're sturdy enough to survive a backpack and taste like actual food instead of cardboard. Paired them with summer sausage at a pullout and felt like a genius.

Keep these in your pack for protein that won't go bad. There's something funny about eating venison while watching bison, but they're legitimately filling and don't need refrigeration.

Fill this with soup or chili the night before. By noon you'll want something warm, especially in spring or fall. Kept my lentil soup hot for six hours during an October visit. Worth the space in the bag.

Gear for Staying Comfortable at Pullouts and Trailheads

Half of bison watching is just waiting. Standing around, sitting in your car, leaning on a fence. Without the right comfort gear, you'll leave early and miss the good stuff.

Clara Wren profile picture
Set this up at any pullout and suddenly you're not standing awkwardly for 45 minutes. Weighs barely a pound. I watched a herd cross the road from this chair with coffee in hand and felt like wildlife royalty.

Toss this foam seat pad in your pack for trail breaks. Sitting on cold, wet Alberta ground is miserable. This weighs nothing and folds flat. Used it at every trailhead rest stop all season.

Strap your binoculars to your chest so they're always ready. Bison appear and disappear fast. Fumbling in your bag means missing the moment. Learned this after a bull crossed the road while my optics were in the trunk.

Bring this because your phone will die from running Merlin, iNaturalist, and the camera all day. No outlets in the park. My phone died at 1pm once and I couldn't even take photos of the biggest herd I'd ever seen.

Keep one in your door pocket for wiping morning dew off your windshield and binocular lenses. Condensation at dawn is constant. Also useful after the inevitable coffee spill during an exciting sighting.

Slather this on before any trail walk from May to August. The mosquitoes near Astotin Lake are aggressive and numerous. I once counted 11 bites on one arm during a 20 minute walk without repellent. Never again.
