My oldest went through two full school years with a pencil box that stuck out the back of the desk and dumped everything when she stood up. These actually slide in flat and stay put.

The real problem was never the box itself. It was everything sliding to one end every time the desk got bumped. These have dividers or slots that keep things from becoming a junk drawer.

Some desks have cubbies so shallow you can barely fit a notebook in there. I measured my kid's desk once and it was barely two inches deep. These are the only things that worked.

Nothing worse than hearing your kid say the pencil box popped open inside the desk and everything fell through to the floor. Again. These lids lock, snap, or zip tight enough to survive being dropped.

Sometimes the pencil box isn't the problem. The entire desk is a black hole. These organizers turn the cubby into something functional so supplies don't end up crammed behind textbooks.

My middle schooler changes rooms six times a day. A hard pencil box was too bulky for the backpack and a loose pouch meant pens stabbing through everything. These travel well and keep supplies contained.
