To me, these shows accurately capture the real vibe of Los Angeles and Hollywood.
Wonderfully complex, nuanced, with mostly unlikeable millenial-ish characters in LA. Reminds me of living in Los Feliz/Silver Lake. Even features a shitty trip to Palm Springs and a night at the Magic Castle. Good stuff.
Love
An amazing show about friendship, love, career, and growing up. Shot all over LA and featuring a lot of South LA neighborhoods normally overlooked by other shows and movies. It's so insanely good, complex, and hilarious. Must-watch.
Insecure
One of my favorite shows ever made. Insanely funny and real. About a bunch of aspiring actors, writers, and has-beens working at a Los Angeles-based catering company called Party Down. A truly accurate portrayal of ridiculous Angelinos, the catering ...
Party Down
A parody of LA and Hollywood. Follows the story of a self-loathing writer, addict, and alcoholic, who is raising his daughter and pining for his long-time lover. Lots of partying, sex, drugs, and horrible people.
Californication
A groundbreaking mid2000s show about a close-knit group of lesbian, bisexual, and queer women living in Los Angeles.
The L Word
A family drama set in LA about a newly divorced single mother living with her bachelor brother while raising her teenage daughter. Does a good job of capturing that particular kind of loneliness that you can only find in the greater Los Angles area.
Casual
A dark family comedy about gender, identity, Jewishness, generational trauma, and acceptance. Besides all of that, it feels very authentically LA to me. From Canter's Deli to Echo Park to the Palisades.
Transparent
1980s Los Angeles show chronicling the professional and personal lives of the LA Lakers. Truly such a cool show. The visuals, the writing, the acting, the casting. So good.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty
A fairly accurate depiction of the lowbrow, insular bubble that is Venice.
Flaked
Excruciatingly toxic, problematic, and cringey. Watch or re-watch at your own risk. It's an accurate reflection on a very specific, very toxic time in Hollywood, and to it's credit, is a very realistic satire of the film business.
Entourage
So extremely LA. Quite possibly one of the most “LA” shows ever made.
Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles
A neurotic, twenty-something rapper in LA trying to make it. They end up going all over the country and world, but there are a lot of very LA-core things in this show including a member of the cast from Odd Future, Benny Blanco's house, and hating go...
Dave
A show about nothing in Los Angeles.
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Ridiculously LA.
Selling Sunset
A dark twisted drama and window into the modern underbelly of the Hollywood scene. Some of the comedic performances in this are 10/10 btw.
